CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team will return to action at the 2023 Hercules Tire Sun Belt Women's Basketball Championship versus No. 8 Marshall at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Fla. The tip-off versus the Thundering Herd on Thursday is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET.
The Chanticleers finished the regular season at 14-15 overall and 9-9 in Sun Belt Conference play after a 76-68 home win over the Old Dominion Monarchs at home on Senior Night.
The Marshall Thundering Herd enter tournament play with an overall record of 16-13 and an identical 9-9 record in the conference with a 71-58 road win over the top-seeded James Madison Dukes in their regular-season finale.
SUN BELT HONORS
Coastal's
Aja Blount and
Deaja Richardson were named to the 2022-23 All-Sun Belt first and third teams, respectively. Blount is a four-time All-Sun Belt selection having been named to the 2019-20 All-Sun Belt second team, the 2020-21 All-Sun Belt third team, the 2021-22 All-Sun Belt first team, and now the 2022-23 All-Sun Belt first team for her performances this year.
Richardson picked up her first conference honor by being named to the 2022-23 All-Sun Belt third team.
LAST TIME OUT
The aforementioned Richardson and Blount led the Chanticleers to a 76-68 win over the Monarchs on Senior Night to avenge a loss earlier in the season. Richardson scored a game-high 22 points while Blount added 17 points to lead four Chants in double-digit scoring.
HISTORY BETWEEN COASTAL AND MARSHALL
Coastal Carolina trails the all-time series with Marshall at 4-3, as the two teams will be meeting for the eighth time on the hardwood. The last time the two teams played, CCU's Blount scored a game-high 18 points to lead three Chants in double-digit scoring as the Chanticleers fell 65-60 on the road in Huntington, W.Va, on Feb. 9.
ABOUT COASTAL
The Chants are averaging 70.6 points per game while shooting 41.7 percent from the field and 33.7 from three-point range. Defensively, Coastal has allowed 68.3 points per game while its opponents are shooting 40.7 percent from the floor.
Forward Blount leads the Chants in double-digit scoring with 17.2 points per game, while guards Richardson,
Arin Freeman,
Angie Juste-Jean, and
Anaya Barney are scoring 13.9, 10.2, 7.4, and 7.2 points, respectively. Freeman leads the Chants in both assists and takeaways with 4.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game. Aside from scoring, Blount leads the team with 8.2 rebounds per game, with Freeman, Juste-Jean, and
Miriam Recarte adding 4.6, 3.8, and 3.8 boards, respectively.
ABOUT MARSHALL
As a team, Marshall is averaging 64.6 points per contest while allowing just 60.0 points per game. The Thundering Herd have outshot their opponents at 40.5 percent to 37.0 percent from the floor. On the year, Marshall has been outrebounded by its opponents at 39.2 to 36.6 rebounds per game.
Roshala Scott leads the team in scoring with 17.7 points per game, while Abby Beeman (13.8) and Mahogany Matthews (9.0) are scoring more than eight points per game. Beeman leads the team with 6.2 rebounds per game, while Matthews and Scott have grabbed an average of 5.0 and 4.8 boards per contest, respectively.
