CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team will return to the road for a four-game Sun Belt Conference road swing this week versus Marshall (Feb. 9) and Southern Miss (Feb. 11). The tip-off versus the Thundering Herd on Thursday is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET, while Coastal and the Golden Eagles will begin at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
The Chanticleers are 11-12 overall on the season and 6-6 in Sun Belt Conference play after rebounding for a 70-67 win over the Appalachian State Mountaineers last Saturday.
The Marshall Thundering Herd enter this week's action at 14-9 overall and 7-5 in the conference, while the Golden Eagles currently sit at 15-8 overall and 8-4 in Sun Belt play.
LAST TIME OUT
Coastal's
Aja Blount scored a season-high 26 points to lead three Chanticleers in double-digit scoring in the home win over the Mountaineers, snapping a six-game skid to them.
Deaja Richards and
Miriam Recarte chipped in with 13 points each. CCU's defense held App State to 19.2 percent (6-of-26) from the three-point line, while the Chants' offense shot 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from long range.
HISTORY BETWEEN COASTAL AND MARSHALL
Coastal Carolina and Marshall are tied in the all-time series at 3-3, as the two teams will be meeting for the seventh time on the hardwood. The last time the two teams played, CCU's Blount scored a game-high 18 points to lead three Chants in double-digit scoring as the Chanticleers held on for the 65-61 home win back on Jan. 12 of this year.
HISTORY BETWEEN COASTAL AND SOUTHERN MISS
The two teams will be meeting for the first time on Saturday, as Coastal Carolina and Southern Miss have never met on the hardwood. The Golden Eagles joined the Sun Belt Conference this year.
ABOUT COASTAL
The Chants are averaging 69.5 points per game while shooting 40.9 percent from the field and 32.4 from three-point range. Defensively, Coastal has allowed 66.9 points per game while its opponents are shooting 40.0 percent from the floor.
Forward Blount leads the Chants in double-digit scoring with 16.3 points per game, while guards Richardson,
Arin Freeman,
Angie Juste-Jean, and
Anaya Barney are scoring 11.7, 10.6, 8.1, and 8.0 points, respectively. Freeman leads the Chants in both assists and takeaways with 4.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Aside from scoring, Blount leads the team with 8.0 rebounds per game, with Freeman and Barney adding 4.8 and 4.0 boards, respectively.
ABOUT MARSHALL
As a team, Marshall is averaging 65.1 points per contest while allowing just 59.7 points per game. The Thundering Herd have outshot their opponents at 40.5 percent to 36.7 percent from the floor. On the year, Marshall has been outrebounded by its opponents at 38.0 to 38.7 rebounds per game.
Roshala Scott leads the team in scoring with 17.7 points per game, while Abby Beeman (13.7) and Mahogany Matthews (8.8) are scoring more than eight points per game. Beeman leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game, while Matthews and Scott have grabbed an average of 4.9 and 4.8 boards per contest, respectively.
ABOUT SOUTHERN MISS
The Golden Eagles are averaging just 61.9 points per contest while holding their opponents to 57.7 points per game. Southern Miss has outshot its opponents at 40.8 percent to 37.9 percent from the floor. On the year, the Lady Eagles have outrebounded their opponents 911-748 in the 23 games to date.
Domonique Davis (16.9) and Melyia Grayson (11.2) lead Southern Miss in scoring, as the duo are averaging over 11 points per game. Grayson leads the Golden Eagles in rebounds at 6.3 boards per game, while Femi Funeus (5.7), Jacorriah Bracy (4.9), and Davis (4.6) have grabbed more than four rebounds per game this season.
