Men’s tennis team will open up SBC play this week

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In the Chanticleers' final non-conference match of the 2023 regular season, the Coastal Carolina men's tennis team battled No. 14 Wake Forest in a 4-0 loss in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Sunday afternoon.

In doubles play, the Chants were victorious on court No. 2, as the team of Lucas Wayenburg and Steve Mundt defeated Wake Forest's Matthew Thomson and Luciano Tacchi 7-5.

However, the nationally-ranked Demon Deacons were able to score the doubles point with a 6-2 win on court No. 3 and then held off the duo of Carlos Berna Ruiz and Maj Tomac on court No. 1 with a 7-5 tiebreaker to take the match 7-6 (7-5).

In singles play, the Chants battled up and down the lineup, with three matches going unfinished.

At the No. 5 spot, Juan Lopez de Azcona defeated Guilherme Toresan 6-0, 6-3, while No. 122 Filippo Moroni upended Berna Ruiz 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 1 to put the home team on top 3-0.

Wake Forest was able to seal the 4-0 win with a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set win on court No. 4, as Bozo Barun held off Ryuya Ata for the win.

The Chanticleers (9-5) will open up Sun Belt Conference play at home this week, as Coastal will host Southern Miss on Thursday, March 16, at 1 p.m. ET and Louisiana on Saturday, March 18, at noon ET.
