CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina's
Kayla Downey set a new single-game program record with 10 points on five goals and five assists as the Chanticleers scored a dominant 21-6 win over Marist on Friday afternoon in Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C.
The win pushed Coastal to 5-3 on the season, while the loss dropped Marist to 2-6.
Downey, the reigning ASUN Offensive Player of the Week, surpassed Sara Nolan for the most points in a single game in CCU history, as Nolan had nine points versus Gardner-Webb on April 9, 2016.
Behind Downey's five goals and five assists, 11 other Chants notched at least one goal, while six other players added an assist as the home team scored 21 goals with the help of 14 assists in the win.
CCU's
Hope Steuerwald (2 goals, 1 assist),
Abi George (2 goals),
Monica Manley (2 goals, 1 assist),
Brigid Cardillo (2 goals), and
Sophie Kingsborough (2 goals) all had two goals in the win.
Avery McIlwaine (1 goal, 3 assists) and
Sydney McClure (2 assists) joined Downey with multiple assists.
For Marist, six different players found the back of the net, led by one goals and one assist by Olivia Arnsten.
Earning the win in goal for the Chants was
Claire Martell, as the starting goalie made nine saves on 18 Marist shot attempts over 45 minutes between the pipes.
The loss fell to the Red Foxes' starter Miranda Lopes, who allowed 17 goals and made 10 saves in just under 40 minutes of action.
Coastal outshot Marist 39-23 for the game and held a 16-15 edge in draw controls.
It took less than 30 seconds for Downey and the Chants to get on the scoreboard, as the redshirt junior found the back of the net off the opening draw to put the home team on top 1-0 with 14:36 to go in the first period.
After Marist tied the game up at the 14:03 mark of the first period on an Alexa Borges goal, the Chanticleers retook the lead on a Steuerwald (12:17) goal off an assist from McIlwaine and then doubled it with a second goal from Downey (10:43) from the first of two assists by McClure to put the score at 3-1.
Off a turnover by Marist, the Chants'
Gabrielle Beckett took a pass from McIlwaine and found the back of the net to push the home team in front by three at 4-1 with 7:26 to go in the opening period.
Marist's Arnsten notched the first of her two goals at the 3:14 mark to cut the Coastal lead to 4-2, only to see CCU's Kingsborough (0:28) add a woman-up free position goal in the closing seconds of the first period to give the Chants a 5-2 lead.
Following an early unassisted goal by Manley (13:12) to open the second period, the Red Foxes recorded back-to-back goals from Arnsten (13:12) and Kerri Gutenberger (12:21) over the next minute of play to close the gap to two at 6-4 with over 12 minutes to go in the first half.
That would be as close as the visitors would get for the rest of the game, as the Chants closed out the first half with five goals over the final six minutes, highlighted by back-to-back goals from Cardillo (5:33 and 4:51) in less than a minute.
Steuerwald (2:38), McIlwaine (1:00),
Bethany Bruck (0:19), and Downey (0:10) all tallied a goal in the run, while Martell made five saves in the second period alone to help push the lead out to 12-4 at the halftime break.
The third period belonged to the Chants, as the Women in Teal outscored the Red Foxes 5-0 in the quarter by outshooting the visitors 11-2.
George (12:48) got the third-quarter scoring with her first of two goals in the period off a second assist from McIlwaine, while Downey (10:21) followed minutes later with an unassisted score to start the running clock with the Chants on top 14-4.
The duo of George and Downey collaborated on the next goal, as Downey provided the helper to George (7:13) before back-to-back goals from Manley (5:34) and
Sydney Tornetta (5:24) off back-to-back plays extended the home team's lead to 17-4 heading into the final period.
With the clock running, the Chants tacked on four more goals in the final period, highlighted by a woman-down goal from Downey (11:26) and one goal each from
Riley Glackin (7:57) and
Avery Snyder (2:08) to counter the Red Foxes' two goals in the frame for the 21-6 home win.
Coastal will hit the road for the first time this season next week, as the Chanticleers will take on Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C., on Saturday, March 25, at noon ET.
