Coastal Softball Blanks Campbell in Midweek Matchup

Williams struck her fifth home run of the season

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team improved to 19-3 on the season after blanking Campbell in a midweek matchup at St. John Stadium on Wednesday.

The Chanticleers started strong in the bottom of the first inning when senior Diamond Williams ignited the offense with a lead-off home run that soared over the left-center field wall to put the home team on top early at 1-0.

The Chants added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning when Riley Zana crushed a double to center field to drive in Williams from second base to make the score 2-0.

The momentum continued for the Chanticleers after Keirstin Roose smashed a double to right-center field to get in to scoring position. Freshman Livi Payne then stepped up to the plate and drilled a single to center field to drive in Roose and extend Coastal's lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Fighting Camels put the Chants under pressure in the top of the sixth inning when a lead-off single and double put two hitters in scoring position with no outs. Raelee Brabham then entered the circle and took care of business striking out two of the next three hitters to preserve the lead at 3-0.

Brabham closed out the game in the top of the seventh inning pitching a 1-2-3 inning to give CCU the 3-0 victory.

Senior Iyanla De Jesus (3-1) tallied her third win of the season, recording four strikeouts and giving up just one hit in 4.0 innings of work, while Brabham notched her second save of the season by striking out four out of six hitters and refusing to give up a single hit in 2.0 innings.

The Chanticleers will be back in action for their final home tournament of the year at St. John Stadium on March, 10-12. CCU welcomes Ohio State, Houston Christian, and Canisius to the three-day event.
