Newton picks up a fourth-place finish

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team shot a 5-over 293 in Tuesday's final round of the Mountaineer Invitational to finish fourth overall after carding a 33-over 897 at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W.Va.

Wintery weather conditions forced the second round to be suspended due to darkness on Monday and was completed Tuesday morning before the start of the third and final round. The Chants had moved into fifth place to start the final round after completing the second round with a seven-over 295.

CCU started the third round going one-under on the round's first nine holes and briefly moved into second place but could not sustain the momentum over the back nine in finishing the event in fourth place.

Conner Newton (77-72-71) was the low-scorer for the Chants, finishing the event tied for fourth after carding a three-day total of four-over 220. After shooting a five-over 77 in the opening round, the super senior shot a one-under over the final two rounds. Newton was tied for seventh in par-4 scoring with a 4.10 scoring average and was tied for fourth in par-3 scoring with a 3.08 scoring average. He also carded 35 pars over the three rounds to finish tied for sixth with the most pars.

Seth Taylor (78-73-72) finished tied for 11th at seven-over 223. Like Newton, Taylor's first round did not start well, but after firing a six-over 78 in the opening round he rebounded to shoot a one-over in the final two rounds. Taylor was tied for 10th in par-3 scoring with a 3.17 scoring average. On the par-5 holes, the senior led the championship with a 4.58 scoring average. Taylor's nine total birdies were tied for the seventh most.

Garrett Cooper (80-75-72), who improved his score in each round, finished tied for 25th with an 11-over 227, while Owen Kim (76-75-80) finished 40th after shooting a 15-over 231. Trey Crenshaw shot a six-over 78 in the final round, while Alex van Wyk (81-79-75), playing as an individual, finished tied for 50th at 19-over 235. Van Wyk led the championship on par-3 holes with a 2.92 scoring average.

"The guys did a great job grinding it out in this event," head coach Jacob Wilner said. "This course is incredibly difficult, and the wind and temps certainly amplified the playing conditions."

Oklahoma State, ranked 20th in the latest golfstat.com rankings, pulled away from the field in the third round to post a 11-over 875, 20 strokes better than Drexel (+31, 895). Host West Virginia finished just one shot in front of Coastal (+33, 897) and fellow Sun Belt member James Madison (+34, 898) was one stroke behind the Chants in fifth.

VCU (+35, 899) finished sixth, followed by St. John's (+43, 907), William & Mary (+54, 918), Xavier (+62, 926), and Marshall (+65, 929) to round out the top 10.

The rest of the field included Western Carolina and Maryland tied at 69-over 933, and UT-Martin (+82, 946).

The event was the final regular-season match for the Chants, as CCU will now head to Madison, Miss., for the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship to be played April 24-27 at the Annandale Golf Club.
