CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team blanked the Stetson Hatters 3-0 at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Chants advance to 3-4 on the season while the Hatters fall to 0-6-1.
Stetson came out hot, taking the first shot of the match in the opening minute of play but the Chants answered right back when Lou Martinet forced two saves in the second and third minute.
The Chants took the lead in the 16th minute when Martinet drove down the left sideline to feed the ball to freshman Emily Petring, who used the outside of her right boot to flick the ball past the Hatters' keeper, Mallory Osbourne, to make the score 1-0.
CCU continued to threaten the Stetson defense when Taylor Tolson and Julia Ziegenfuss each drilled shots on goal in the 21st and 26th minute, respectively, but they were met by the hands of Osbourne to hold the score at 1-0.
Coastal looked to extend its lead in the 35th minute when Ella Schad slotted the ball to Talana Banks to set up a 1-vs-1 fast break but Osbourne came in clutch with another big save to deny the Chants.
The Chants led the first frame 7-1 in shots while forcing six saves to Coastal's zero.
CCU wasted no time in the second period to add to its total when Petring chipped the ball to the back post to meet the head of Martinet, who netted Coastal's second goal of the game to make the score 2-0.
Coastal's relentless attack continued when Obsourne's outstretched foot denied Natalie Yoo's shot attempt but the rebound fell to the feet of Cami Wiles, who buried the ball into the back of the net to put CCU up 3-0 with 36 minutes left to play.
The Chants took four more shots in the remainder of the match while the Hatters doubled their shot total in the final five minutes off two freekick attempts but CCU keeper Vivienne Carr took care of trouble to give the CCU the 3-0 win.
The Chanticleers will be back in action on Sept. 15 when they open up Sun Belt Conference play versus Old Dominion at 6 p.m. ET.
