CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team was bested by the College of Charleston Cougars 2-0 in its first away contest of the year on Tuesday night in Charleston, S.C.
With the loss, the Chants fell to an even 2-2 record while the Cougars advanced to 2-0-2 on the year.
The Cougars took charge in the opening 15 minutes leading the Chants 3-0 on shots while forcing Coastal keeper Kilian Vallant to make a critical save just one minute into the contest.
Paolo Roditti took Coastal's first shot of the night in the 24th minute, which was blocked away to give CCU a chance to run a corner set play. This ball fell to Ewan Gordon, and he drilled the ball on goal but it was met by the hands of CofC keeper Olly Marshall to keep the score level at 0-0.
CofC midfielder Chris Cushing put the Cougars on the scoreboard in the 36th minute when he railed the ball into the top left corner off an assist from Ethan Garvey to make the score 1-0.
The Cougars outshot the Chants 7-3 in the opening period and led CCU 5-1 in corners.
CofC pulled ahead in the 54th minute of the match when Peter Thomas laced the ball into the top right corner off an assist from Chris Mattlashewski to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead with 36 minutes left to play.
Just two more shots were taken in the following 20 minutes both of which came off the boot of the Cougars but neither posed any danger on the CCU defense.
The Chants threatened the Cougars in the 75th minute when Asgeir Magnusson's shot was deflected for CCU's third corner of the night. Anton Bjarkason then looked to narrow the gap three minutes later when he took fire on goal but it was met by Marshall's fifth save of the evening.
CCU took three more shots in the remaining 10 minutes of action however it wasn't enough to claw back from the 2-0 deficit.
The Chanticleers will return to the CCU Soccer Stadium on Sept. 11 as they take on the Furman Paladins at 4 p.m. ET.
