Cange Records Double-Double in Coastal’s Loss to Marshall

Women’s basketball to take to the road for four straight games

CONWAY, S.C. – Makaila Cange picked up her fifth double-double of the season for Coastal Carolina, but it was not enough to keep Marshall from picking up a 72-60 win in a women's basketball Sun Belt Conference game Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center. With the win, Marshall stayed undefeated in league play at 5-0 and improved to 11-5 overall.

Cange, a 5-11 senior forward who had 13 points and 13 rebounds, was one of three Coastal players in double figures. Alancia Ramsey, an improving freshman forward, contributed 12 points and graduate student Deaja Richardson added 11, with eight of those coming in the second half. With the loss, the Chanticleers are now 7-11 overall and 1-4 in the conference. With her numbers, Cange improved slightly on her season's averages of 12 points and seven rebounds per game.

Marshall, which led for all but one minute of the game, was paced by junior guard Aislynn Hayes, who scored 23, just two shy of her season high.

The Marshall players wasted little time in showing that they were deadly from long range. They made 6-of-8 three-point attempts to take a 21-13 lead after Coastal had led 11-9. The final three-pointer was in the midst of a 15-2 run that put Marshall in front 24-13. The lead rose to 13 points, the largest of the game at 30-17, before Coastal regrouped and made a 12-4 run on four inside buckets and a three-pointer from Dalanna Carter.

Marshall's hot hand cooled, but the Herd still led 37-29 at the half. Cange's inside play for Coastal yielded six points and eight rebounds in the first half, while Carter had seven points.

Coastal turned the tide in the third quarter, outscoring the Herd 15-14 in the period. Ramsey and Richardson each had four points in a 10-0 run that gave the Chants a momentary 43-42 lead on a layup from a brilliant pass from Cange, who led the team with five assists. However, Hayes put Marshall back in front just seconds later with a three-pointer, her fourth of the game.

The basket started a 9-1 run that put Marshall safely back in front the rest of the way. The closest Coastal got was 61-55 on Ramsey's follow-up basket with just under five minutes left.

Coastal hit a better percentage from the field than its opponent but did not match Marshall's touch from long range. The Thundering Herd finished 12-of-35 from three-point range, with Hayes making 6-of-9 long-range attempts. Coastal had 20 turnovers that led directly to 26 points for Marshall.

Coastal now takes to the road for four away games over the next two weeks, starting with a game at Appalachian State on Thursday (Jan. 18). The Chanticleers will then play at Marshall, Louisiana, and ULM before returning home on Feb. 1 to host Georgia State.
