Men’s Soccer Falls to Georgia Southern

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team fell the Georgia Southern Eagles, 5-0, on Friday night at the CCU Soccer Complex.

With the loss, the Chants fall to 2-7-0, 1-2-0 Sun Belt, while the Eagles improve to 5-1-3, 1-0-1 on the season.

The Eagles were on offense from the opening kick, firing three shots in the opening five minutes of action, but none threatened the Coastal defense to hold the score at 0-0.

Sophomore Robert Valdimarsson tried to get the Chants on the scoreboard in the 24th minute when he ripped the ball on frame but it was met by the hands of the Eagles keeper to keep the score level at 0-0.

Georgia Southern broke through in the 36th minute when Zachary Martin smashed the ball into the bottom right corner to record his first goal of the season off assists from Ty Wilson and Ole Songe to put the Eagles up 1-0.

At the end of the first frame, Georgia Southern led 9-3 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks.

The Eagles looked to extend their lead in the 53rd minute when awarded a penalty kick. Zachary Martin stepped up to the spot and belted the ball towards the bottom left corner, but Coastal keeper Tristan Himes made the save. The danger was not over for the Chants as Himes left his goal line early so the Eagles were awarded a retake of the penalty kick. This time, Ricky Louis stepped up and struck the ball down the middle, which was once again saved by Himes to hold the score at 1-0.

In the 60th minute, Georgia Southern doubled its lead when Martin found the back of the net off assists from Joe O'Connor and AJ Pama to make the score 2-0.

Georgia Southern went up 3-0 in the 72nd minute as O'Connor and Kevin Pierre linked up to assist Ryan Holmes for his seventh goal of the season.

The Eagles continued to attack the CCU defense in the remaining 18 minutes of the match, tallying two more goals in the 74th and 83rd minutes to secure the 5-0 victory.

The Chanticleers will remain at home to take on the Campbell Camels at the CCU Soccer Complex on Oct. 8. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
