CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team downed the Campbell Fighting Camels, 1-0, on Tuesday night at the CCU Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Chants improve to 3-7-0 overall while the Fighting Camels fall to 6-3-4 on the season.
Campbell came out firing in the opening 20 minutes, taking five shots while forcing three saves out of goalkeeper Harrison Gough, who held strong in his Coastal debut to keep the score at 0-0.
In the 29th minute, Deryn Armstrong had Coastal's most promising chance of the half when Loed Klaasen delivered the ball through to put him 1-vs-1 with the Campbell keeper, but the senior pulled his shot just wide to keep the score level at 0-0.
With two minutes left to play in the first half, the Chants looked to get on the board when Klaasen whipped a corner kick into the box and Gudjon Steffanson and Doug Hainer each took shots, but they were both blocked away to hold the score at 0-0.
At the end of the first frame Campbell led 8-7 in shots and both team tied with three corners apiece.
Doug Hainer pressed the Fighting Camels defense in the second half, smashing two shots on frame in the 63rd and 76th minutes which were narrowly kept out by the Campbell keeper to keep the match at a stalemate.
The Chants finally broke through in the 76th minute when Gudjon Steffansson headed the ball forward to Lincoln Ulrich. Ulrich then ripped a volley over the keeper's head to put the Chants up 1-0.
The Fighting Camels outshot Coastal 3-2 in the final 14 minutes, highlighted by a free kick attempt from the edge of the box with 11 seconds on the clock, but the Chants ultimately held on for the 1-0 victory.
The Chanticleers will hit the road to take on No. 8 James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va., on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. ET.
