Chants Welcome Appalachian State for ESPN Thursday Night Showdown

CONWAY, S.C. –
 The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers take center stage before a national audience on Thursday night as the Chants welcome rival Appalachian State to the "Surf Turf" for Sun Belt East battle. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET. Matt Barrie, Dan Mullen, and Harry Lyles, Jr., will have the call on ESPN. CCU fans can hear the Chanticleer Sports Radio Network broadcast with Chris Burgin, Layne Harris, Joe Catenacci, and Sam Weiderhaft on WRNN 99.5 FM and online at wrnn.net.

FOR THE BEACH
• Coastal is looking for its third consecutive win at home over the rival Mountaineers. 

• After dropping the first meeting in Conway in 2018, the Chants have won two straight at Brooks Stadium over App, winning in 2020 and 2022. 
 
CHUNK PLAYS
• Coastal Carolina has tallied 40 plays at 20 yards or more through eight games this season.

• Quarterback Ethan Vasko ranks fourth nationally in yards per completion.

UNDER THE RADAR
• Coastal's offensive line has quietly put together another strong season under offensive line coach Derek Warehime.

• CCU enters Thursday night eighth in the nation in sacks allowed per game and 14th nationally in tackles for loss allowed per game. 

HOUSE CALLS
• Coastal's defense, "The Black Swarm," has made the most of their fumble returns this season.

• All three fumbles that the Chants have picked up and returned have gone for touchdowns.
 
CHANTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
• Thursday marks Coastal's fourth appearance before a national television audience in 2024. 

• The Chanticleers have already played on CBS Sports Network (at Jacksonville State), ESPN2 (at James Madison), and ESPNU (Louisiana) this year.

ADJUSTMENTS PAY OFF
• Coastal's put 17 points on the board during the third quarter at Troy last weekend.

• The 17-point quarter was the most for the Chants since scoring 17 in the first quarter of the season opener at Jacksonville State.

KICKERS ARE PEOPLE, TOO
• Kicker Kade Hensley has been one of the nation's most consistent this season.

• Hensley is 10-of-12 on field goal attempts, including 9-of-10 from inside 50 yards, and a perfect 31-of-31 on extra points
 
NO SURPRISE
• Wide receiver Jameson Tucker was announced this week as a Burlsworth Trophy nominee. 
 
• Tucker, who began his career as a walk-on, leads the Chants this season in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.

COASTAL'S HOUSE
• CCU has been home to one of college football's best homefield advantages in recent years.

• Since 2020, Coastal is 24-6 on the "Surf Turf" at Brooks Stadium

EVERY PLAY COUNTS
• Coastal's special teams shone again last Thursday at Troy.

• Tucker recorded Coastal's second blocked punt of the season and CCU held Troy 
 
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS OF APPALACHIAN STATE
• Appalachian State is 4-4 and coming off a 28-20 win over Old Dominion.

• App State's defense had four takeaways and five sacks in the win vs. ODU.

• App State had a different leading rusher in five straight games, with Kanye Roberts gaining 148 yards at Louisiana and Ahmani Marshall posting 115 vs. Georgia State, before Marshall made it back-to-back 100-yard games with 120 yards on a career-high 23 carries vs. ODU.

• Averaging 283.8 passing yards per game with 18 TD passes this season, QB Joey Aguilar is the nation's only returning FBS QB who had 33-plus TD passes and 3,700-plus passing yards in 2023. 

• Kaedin Robinson ranks 10th nationally and 1st in the Sun Belt at 95.5 receiving yards per game.

• After tying for the Sun Belt lead last year with 10 TD receptions while catching 67 passes for 905 yards, Robinson has been App State's receiving yardage leader in all eight games in 2024.

• App State is averaging 174.8 yards on the ground over the last four games after averaging 130.8 in the first four games.

• Running back Kanye Roberts scored his first rushing touchdown of the season at Marshall before rushing for a career-high 148 yards on 26 carries at Louisiana.
