ROCK HILL, S.C. – Rasheed Jones scored a career-high 21 points and led five Chanticleers in double figures, but it was not enough as Coastal Carolina fell at Winthrop 96-89 in a shootout at the Winthrop Coliseum Saturday night in Rock Hill.
The Eagles (8-3) opened up a 17-point lead just 90 seconds into the second half after opening the half on an 8-0 run to push their lead to 56-39 before the Chants started to chip away at the lead.
CCU (4-5) finally fought back and took a brief lead at 83-82 on a tip in from
Noah Amenhauser with four minutes left in the game. Winthrop was able to outscore the Chants 14-6 the rest of way, mainly on free throws in pulling out the win.
Jordan Battle scored 14 points in the game followed by Amenhauser with 13, with
Denzel Hines and
Joshua Meo scoring 10 each as the Chants shot 53.7 percent (29-54) from the field. CCU hit 10 of their 23 three-point attempts for 43.5 percent and was 21-of-29 at the free throw line for 72.4 percent.
The Chants won the rebounding battle 31-28 with Jones' grabbing a team and game-high seven.
K.J. Doucet led the Eagles with a game-high 23 points followed by Kelton Talford with 21. Kasen Harrison added 19 points and Nick Johnson scored 15.
Winthrop shot 54.7 percent (29-53) from the field and 41.2 percent (7-17) on their three-point attempts. The game was won at the free throw line as the Eagles hit 31 of their 40 free throws for 77.5 percent, outscoring the Chants by 10 at the charity stripe.
Winthrop led 48-39 at halftime after shooting 56 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Doucet had 11 and Talford added 10 to lead the Eagles.
Winthrop was also able to get to the free throw line where they sank 14 of their 20 attempts for 70 percent.
The Chants got 11 points from Jones while Battle added six. CCU shot 44 percent from the field and hit 11 of their 14 free throw attempts for 79 percent.
CCU will be back in action Wednesday, Dec. 11, when Southern Virginia visits the HTC Center. The opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
