CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team claimed its first win of the 2024 season today with a dominant 21-5 win over the Wofford Terriers at Brooks Stadium.
The Chants were able to bounce back in dominating fashion following the opening day defeat to Vermont on Friday, as graduate Abi George and senior Maddie Bates led the way on the scoresheet with four goals apiece. CCU outshot the Terriers 21-8 in the first half, and 31-17 in the game. The Coastal keepers were required to make nine saves on the day, three coming from junior Charlotte Sadler and six from senior Claire Martell.
Junior Brigid Cardillo opened the scoring account for CCU, putting one in the back of the net less than three minutes into the game, giving the Chants an early 1-0 lead. Coastal would go on to put five more on the board prior to end of the first quater, ending the first 15 with a commanding 6-1 advantage. Â
CCU got off to a slow start early in the second quarter, surrendering two goals within the first eight minutes. After the Terriers cut the lead to three inside of eight minutes to go in the half, Coastal proceeded to close out the opening half on an 8-0 run, with another score coming from Cardillo and George, a pair of goals from seniors Monica Manley and Maddie Bates, as well as contributions from seniors Avery Snyder and Sydney McClure.
In a more evenly paced third period, McClure and Bates each added another goal to the tally to put Coastal up 16-5 entering the final 15 minutes of play.
The Chants would go on to outscore Wofford 5-0 in the fourth quarter. Manley completed her second consecutive hat trick of the new season just 23 seconds into the quarter. Senior transfer Erin Clark, sophomore Sophie Kingsborough and freshman Evelyn Kitchin each got on the scoresheet in the game's dying moments, rounding out a resounding 21-5 win for CCU.
Following their home victory over Wofford, the Chants will travel to Clemson, S.C. to take on the Clemson Tigers on Saturday, Feb. 17, starting at 12 P.M. ET.Â
