Chants trailed by nine strokes entering the final round

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team made up a nine-stroke deficit to start the third round at the Sea Best Invitational to pull out the championship by two strokes with a 19-over 883 (292-292-299) on Tuesday afternoon at the San Jose Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.

After making up the nine-stroke difference and taking the lead, the championship came down to the final hole with freshman Varatkarn Kunkaew completing the championship comeback with a par on the 18th hole, which included a delicate two-putt finish coming down hill off a two-tier green with her putt stopping inches from the cup for the tap-in championship par.

It was not an easy day of golf for any of the teams as high winds made play especially hard with none of the teams completing the third round in par-or-better fashion. The Chants final round total of 11-over 299 was the highest score for CCU in the tournament, but was the third best score of the day.

Kunkaew, who was in the running for the individual championship, finished the tournament in third place at even-par 216 (72-69-75).

Luisa Gibson was the second Chanticleer with a top-10 finish as her five-over 221 (73-74-74) placed her in a tie for ninth, while Hannah Karg finished tied for 16th with her eight-over 224 (76-75-73). Her third-round 73 was the low-round of the day for the Chants.

Sara Sarrion finished tied for 25th after shooting a nine-over 225 (74-74-77) and Isabella Spinazze finished 63rd with a 22-over 238 (73-85-80).

The championship was the 23rd team title for head coach Katie Quinney, who took over the Chanticleers program in 2007.

Campbell, who entered the third round with the lead, finished second with a 21-over 885 (289-286-310) with Charleston Southern third, only one stroke back of Campbell with a 22-over 886 (289-294-303). USC Upstate (+27, 891) and High Point (+28, 892) rounded out the top five finishers.

Cincinnati (+36, 900) finished sixth, followed by Stetson (+38, 902) in seventh. Daytona State College made the largest move of the day jumping four spots to finish eighth (+44, 908), followed by Florida Gulf Coast (+47, 911), and Navy (+49, 913).

The rest of the field included Seminole State (+55, 919), host Jacksonville (+58, 922), Houston Christian (+60, 924), Holy Cross (+115, 979) and South Alabama (+122, 986).

The Chanticleers will be back in action on Feb. 26-27 for the Rivertowne Invitational played at the Rivertowne Golf Club in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
