Men's Basketball on Final Road Trip of the Regular Season

Chants to face Georgia State and Old Dominion

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball program will take to the road for the final two Sun Belt Conference games of the regular season, when they play at Georgia State, Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. ET, and at Old Dominion, Saturday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. ET.

LAST TIME OUT

CCU fought back from an early 10-point deficit and hung on to defeat Marshall 74-67. It was the Chanticleers second consecutive win.

Freshman Jacob Meyer finished off an outstanding performance with a game-high 21 points. It was the 22nd time in 25 games this season he has reached double-digit scoring.

Another freshman, Braeden MacVicar, picked up the first double-double of his young career with 12 points, and tying his career-high with 10 rebounds.

Not to be outdone, the Sun Belt Conference's leader in double-doubles, John Ojiako, collected his 16th on the season with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Kylan Blackmon finished off a stellar week of play collecting 14 points, just two days after scoring 31 points in a win over Georgia Southern. Blackmon averaged 22.5 points per game in the two victories.

THE SERIES
vs. Georgia State

This will be the 17th meeting between Georgia State and Coastal. The Chants hold a 9-7 lead in the series and have won two consecutive games in the series, including a thrilling 85-83 overtime win in Conway in January.

The Panthers have won four of the six contests in Atlanta, with CCU's last win at Georgia State coming in 2022, another overtime game with a final 72-68 score.

The series started with games in 2007 and 2008, both CCU victories. Since joining the Sun Belt Conference for the 2016-17 season, the two teams have split 14 games with each team winning seven times.

In the Chanticleers nine wins in the series, the games have been relatively close with the average winning margin being 7.9 points. When the Panthers have won, it has been by an average of 14.6 points.

vs. Old Dominion

Old Dominion and Coastal have only met five times on the hardcourt with the Monarchs holding a slim 3-2 edge in the series. The two teams played in Conway earlier this season with the Chants holding on for a 79-75 victory.

The series started with an ODU victory in 2001, with the teams not meeting again until 2012, another ODU win 68-66. With ODU joining the Sun Belt Conference last season the teams met twice on the court with each team winning a one-point game on the other's homecourt. CCU defeated ODU 67-66 with three free throws with a second left in the game, and ODU returned the favor with winning free throws with little time left on the clock in a 60-59 victory at the HTC Center.

ABOUT THE CHANTS

CCU enters the week with an 8-17 record overall and 5-9 in Sun Belt Conference action, and presently tied for ninth in the conference with South Alabama, Georgia Southern, and ULM.

Meyer leads the team in scoring at 14.4 points per game and is now the eighth leading scorer in the Sun Belt Conference. His 42.2 shooting percentage on his three-point attempts is second in the conference and his 44.9 percent field goal shooting percentage is seventh.

Ojiako continues to average a double-double on the season with 12.6 points per game and a Sun Belt Conference-leading 10.5 rebounds per game.

Blackmon is on a shooting tear over his last three games. He has averaged 20.2 points per game and has shot 64.5 percent from the field and 60.9 percent on his three-point attempts. He is now averaging 12.0 points per game and his 2.00 three-point field goals made per game is eighth in the Sun Belt Conference.

ABOUT GEORGIA STATE

The Panthers were picked to finish 11th in the preseason coaches' poll and enter the week tied for eighth with a 6-8 conference record and 12-14 overall.

Lucas Taylor is GSU's leading scorer averaging 13.8 points per game. He had 14 points against the Chants in this season's earlier game. He is shooting over 41 percent from the field and 81 percent at the free throw line.

Toneari Lane averages 12.9 points per game and leads the team with 72 made three-point field goals, while Dwon Odom averages 11.7 points per game. He exploded for 30 points against CCU back in January. He leads the team and is third in the Sun Belt with 113 assists and has a team-high 16 blocked shots.

ABOUT OLD DOMINION

ODU enters the week of action 6-21 overall and 2-12 in conference play.

The Monarchs have dropped five consecutive games, but like the Chants, several of their contests have gone down to the final horn. They have lost eight games by five points or less, with four of those games by a single possession, including last Saturday's 68-65 loss to Georgia State.

Chaunce Jenkins leads the team averaging 16.2 points per game and had a game-high 24 points against CCU in Conway back on Jan. 13. Tyrone Williams averages 12.0 points per game and leads the stingy ODU defense with 38 steals.
