Men's Basketball to Host Final Homestand

Chants will host Arkansas State and James Madison to end the regular season

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball program is back home to host the final regular-season games of the 2023-24 season. CCU will host Arkansas State on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. ET, and James Madison on Friday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Both games are the second games of double-headers with the women's team and Friday's game against JMU will be Senior Night.
 
LAST TIME OUT
 
CCU fell at Old Dominion 75-59, in a game that was close until the final five minutes of the game. John Ojiako picked up his 16th double-double of the season with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while freshman Jacob Meyer scored 16 points.
 
THE SERIES
vs. Arkansas State
 
The CCU and Arkansas State series is even with both teams having six wins in the series. Arkansas State has won the past two games between the two programs, including last season's 86-69 win in Pensacola, Fla., in the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
 
CCU has a 2-2 record at home in the series, but has lost the last two home games. In Jonesboro, Ark., the Chants have won four of the six meetings.
 
The series started in 1987 with an Arkansas State 65-52 win in the Arkansas-Little Rock Tournament. They did not play again until the Chants joined the Sun Belt Conference for the 2016-17 season.
 
vs. James Madison
 
This has been a short series with the teams only meeting four times on the hardcourt. JMU has won all four of those contests including a 105-67 win in Harrisonburg, Va., back on Feb. 1.
 
ABOUT THE CHANTS
 
The Chants enter the final games with an 8-19 overall record and 5-11 in Sun Belt Conference action. Meyer continues to lead the Chants in scoring averaging 14.78 points per game, which is also the seventh-best scoring average in the conference.
 
Ojiako's named is among several categories including leading the Sun Belt Conference in rebounds (10.7); field goal percentage (64.4); defensive rebounds (7.30); double-doubles (16); and most games with 10+ rebounds (19). Ojiako is second in offensive rebounds (3.41); and 10th in blocked shots (1.04).
 
ABOUT ARKANSAS STATE
 
The Red Wolves are one of the more surprising team's in the conference. After being picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches' poll, A-State enters the final week of the regular season 15-14 overall and 10-6 in conference action, which has them all alone in fourth place.
 
ASU also enters the week one of the hottest team's in the Sun Belt having won five consecutive games. Among those wins are impressive road and home wins over Troy and also two wins over South Alabama.
 
ASU enters the game with one of the top offenses in the conference averaging 80.07 points per game, trailing only James Madison (84.59).
 
ASU's main offensive weapon is the three-point field goal. They have hit 288 threes this season, 40 more than second place JMU. Their 803 three-point attempts are also a conference-leading number.
 
Taryn Todd leads the Red Wolves in scoring averaging 12.8 points per game, followed closely by Caleb Fields at 12.6 points per game.
 
Other double-digit scorers are Dyondre Dominguez (11.5), Derrian Ford (10.6), and Freddy Hicks (10.4).
 
ABOUT JAMES MADISON
 
James Madison enters the final week with a 26-3 overall record, which is the most wins and highest winning percentage in the Sun Belt. The Dukes are still fighting for the conference's regular season championship and the top overall seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Championship. They have a 13-3 conference record and trail conference-leading Appalachian State by one game.
 
JMU is the hottest team in the league having won eight consecutive games entering the week, and also enter the week with the Sun Belt's top-scoring offense averaging 84.59 points per game, and while its offense is good, the defense is also good allowing its opponents only 68.79 points per game, which is second in the conference.
 
Terrence Edwards leads JMU in scoring averaging 17.2 points per game, while TJ Bickerstaff is averaging 14.0. Other double-digit scorers are Noah Freidel (11.9) and Julien Wooden (10.3).
