MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team finished second at the 2024 General James Hackler Championship with an even-par 864 (294-280-290) on Wednesday afternoon at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The second-place finish was the team's best finish since finishing fourth in 2013. It was also the fifth time the Chants have finished second in the event, matching that finish in 2010, 2008, 2007 and 2006.
Seth Taylor was the low scorer for the Chants, finishing the event with a four-under 212 (73-67-72). The senior finished the championship with 11 birdies, the ninth best total, and was tied for fourth with 37 pars. Taylor finished with a 2.92 scoring average on the par 3s which was tied for the fifth-best, and his 4.50 scoring average on the par 5s was tied for ninth.
Taylor was one of three top-20 finishers for the Chants, finishing the event tied for sixth.
Trey Crenshaw finished tied for eighth at one-under 215 (74-71-70). He was tied for fifth in par 4 scoring at 4.03 and was tied for third in eagles with one.
While he was playing as an individual in the event,
Trace McDonald posted the best score of the day for CCU, when he shot a 69 over the final 18 holes. McDonald finished tied for 20th with a three-over 219 (74-76-69). His 2.83 scoring average on par 3s was tied for the third top scoring average, while he was tied for fifth in par 4 scoring at 4.03. He was also tied for fourth with 37 pars over the three-day event.
Jack Lee finished tied for 35th with a six-over 222 (72-70-80), and
Garrett Cooper had a seven-over 223 (76-72-75) to finish tied for 41st.
Owen Kim finished tied for 54th, carding a 10-over 226 (75-78-73), while
Connor Bennink finished tied for 64th at 13-over 229 (78-73-78) and
Ludvig Eriksson was tied for 67th with a 14-over 230 (81-75-74).
"This was such an awesome edition of the Hackler Championship," head coach
Jacob Wilner said. "The weather was great, the course was phenomenal, and the Chants performed well in a very stout field. It's such an honor to host an event of this magnitude and feel we put on a good show."
The 2024 General James Hackler championship belongs to Louisville, which finished five strokes ahead of the Chants at five-under 859. Furman finished third just one stroke behind CCU at one-over 865. East Tennessee State and Chattanooga finished tied for fourth at three-over 867.
The College of Charleston was sixth at four-over 868 with North Florida finishing seventh at nine-over 873, followed by San Francisco (+10, 874). Kent State (+12, 876) and Little Rock (+12, 876) tied for ninth.
The rest of the field included Liberty (+13, 877), UNCW (+22, 886), Western Carolina (+52, 916), and Charleston Southern (+68, 932).
The Chants will be back in action at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate scheduled for March 24-26 at the Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awandaw, S.C.
