Max Bengtsson is tied for 12th at 2-under par after the opening round of the NCAA Athens Regional. Bengtsson is four strokes off the lead and three shots out of the individual qualifying spot. Sophomore
Drew Sykes posted an opening-round 3-over par to sit tied for 52nd.
Bengtsson recorded four birdies and two bogeys during his first round.
After the opening round, Louisville leads the Athens Regional at 10-under 274. Auburn and Vanderbilt are tied for second at 7-under 277, followed by BYU in fourth at 6-under 278. Rice and Georgia are tied for fifth at 5-under 279.
Auburn's Josiah Gilbert leads the individual standings after carding a 6-under 66 in the first round. Northwestern's Ethan Tseng owns the lowest score among individuals not on a top-five team at 5-under 67 and is tied for second overall. The top individual not on one of the five qualifying teams advances to the NCAA Championships.
The second round of the NCAA Athens Regional begins at 8 a.m. ET on Tuesday with staggered tee times. Sykes will tee off at 10:01 a.m., while Bengtsson is scheduled to begin play at 10:34 a.m.
