WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team shut out the UNCW Seahawks 7-0 in Wilmington, N.C., on Wednesday afternoon.
The Chants improve to 13-6 while UNCW falls to 9-9.
Coastal stormed ahead in the top of the first inning when Iyanla De Jesus cracked a two-run double to left field to put the Chants up 2-0. Maddy Jennings then continued the scoring for CCU when she knocked an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.
One more run came for the Chants in the opening inning when a UNCW throwing error allowed De Jesus to cross home plate to give CCU a healthy 4-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, CCU pushed ahead 5-0 when De Jesus hammered her fifth home run of the season over the left field wall. Coastal added another insurance run in the top of the fourth when Riley Zana laced the ball to right field allowing Clara Hudgens to reach home to make the score 6-0.
The Chants tallied another run to their total in the top of the sixth inning when Zana slotted a single up the middle to drive in her second RBI of the day and ultimately give CCU a 7-0 win.
Raelee Brabham improved to 9-2 on the season. The fifth-year senior allowed four hits while striking out four batters in her 7.0 scoreless innings of work in the circle.
The Chanticleers will be back in action this weekend as they host their fourth and final home tournament at St. John Stadium. CCU will welcome Boston, Ohio, and George Mason for the Beach Chicken Brawl, March 8-10.
