Macon, Ga. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team's comeback effort fell short today on the road in a 24-20 loss against the Mercer Bears at Five Star Stadium in Macon, Ga.
Mercer struck first with two goals inside of the first four minutes of play, but Coastal would response with a 2-0 run of its own to even the score at the 9:39 minute mark of the first quarter. The Bears would lead 5-4 after the opening 15 minutes, despite four different Chants putting their name on the scoresheet.
Mercer led 13-5 going into the halftime break, leading by as many as nine with 2:25 left in the third period, but the Chants outscored the Bears 15-11 in the second half. Coastal cut the lead to one with 5:23 remaining in regulation after a timely goal from senior attacker Sydney McClure.
Mercer would ice the game with three more goals before the final whistle with contributions coming from Kayla Soltys and Sandy Salit.
Coastal finished with 20 goals on 36 attempts, 28 on target, along with nine ground balls, 25 draw controls to Mercer's 23 and a 15-17 clear percentage.
For the Chants, seven finished with multiple goals, including Brigid Cardillo, Avery McIlwaine, Monica Manley, Alyson Mascolo, Maddie Bates, Abi George and McClure. After adding two more this afternoon, McClure continues to lead in the scoring category for CCU with 17 goals through the first seven games.
The loss to Mercer drops the Chants to 3-4 on the season, with a meeting with the Manhattan Jaspers looming on deck on Mar. 14 at 12 P.M. ET at Brooks Stadium.
