Chants Deliver Two Shutouts to Charleston Southern in Doubleheader

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team delivered two shutout victories to Charleston Southern on Wednesday at St. John Stadium. CCU downed the Buccaneers 10-0 in game one and followed with a 7-0 win in game two.

With the wins, Coastal improves to 24-16 overall, while CSU drops to 18-20 on the season.

Game 1: Coastal 10, Charleston Southern 0

The Chants got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first inning after four walks loaded the bases and brought in the first run. Georgia Hood then stepped up to the plate and smashed CCU's fifth grand slam of the year to make the score 5-0.

Coastal added to its lead in the bottom of the second inning when Hood laced an RBI double to right-center field to make the score 6-0. Ava Hampton then crushed a three-run homer over the left-center field wall to extend CCU's lead to 9-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Chants added one more run to their total, scoring on a walk to ultimately take the 10-0 shutout victory.

Raelee Brabham improved to 18-7 in the circle, allowing just one hit in her 4.0 scoreless innings of work.

Game 2: Coastal 7, Charleston Southern 0

Coastal was first to strike in the bottom of the second inning when Brie Normandin cracked an RBI single to left-center field to put the Chants up 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Clara Hudgens laid down a perfect bunt to reach first base and was later brought home on a Charleston Southern error to make the score 2-0.

The Chants continued to dominate in the bottom of the fifth inning when Hood hit her seventh RBI of the day and Hampton hit a two-run homer to extend the lead to 5-0. Delaney Keith then delivered the final blow when she belted a two-run double to right field to give Coastal the 7-0 win.

Nicolette Picone (4-7) refused to give up a single run and struck out three batters in her 7.0 innings of work. The junior was on track for her second perfect game of the season, but the Buccaneers scrambled one hit in the top of the sixth inning to deny her this achievement.

The Chanticleers will be back in action at St. John Stadium for a three-game series versus App State on April 12-14.
