CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team fell 5-2 in its series opener versus the Appalachian State Mountaineers at St. John Stadium on Friday evening.
 
With the loss, Coastal falls to 25-17, 5-8 Sun Belt, while the Mountaineers improve to 16-19 and 4-9 in league play.
 
The Mountaineers got off to an early lead in the top of the first frame when Taylor Thorp crushed a sacrifice fly into right field to drive in the first run and put App State up 1-0.
 
In the top of the third inning, the Mountaineers added to their lead when Thorp ripped an RBI single to center field to double their lead, 2-0.
 
The Chants leveled the score in the bottom of the third inning as Delaney Keith blasted a home run over the centerfield wall to make the score 2-2.
 
After two scoreless innings, App State regained the lead in the top of the sixth frame when Abby Cunningham cracked a two-run single to left field to push the Mountaineers ahead, 4-2.
 
App State added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning with Peyton Darnell's solo home run over the centerfield wall to take the 5-2 victory.
 
Raelee Brabham dropped to 18-8 in the circle, giving up five runs and eight hits in her 7.0 innings of work.
 
The Chanticleers will be back in action at St. John Stadium tomorrow for game two at 2 p.m. ET.
