CONWAY, S.C. – The No. 20 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers allowed five home runs in the 15-4 loss in game two of the three-game series to Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon.
The Chanticleers (21-9, 6-5 SBC) starter
Alexander Meckley (3-2, 0.2IP, 3Hs, 3Rs, 2BBs, 2Ks) suffered his second loss of the season without getting out of the first inning. The right-handed pitcher loaded the bases before getting an out. ODU's Alex Bouche (3-for-6, HR, 2Rs, 4RBIs) singled through the left side to plate two before Nick Mueller (2-for-5, HR, R, 2RBIs) drove in Luke Waters (2-for-5, HR, 2Rs, 2RBIs) for the early 3-0 lead first inning lead.
After working around a one-out single and walk in the home half of the first, the Monarchs (16-14, 5-6 SBC) added a run in the top of the second on a double by Hunter Cole to score Steven Meier (3-for5, 4Rs) to lead 4-0. Coastal's
Graham Brown opened the home half of the frame with a lead-off shot down over the left-field wall to trail 4-1.
The visiting Monarchs added an insurance run in the top of the third when Evan Holman singled to right field to score Kenny Levari (2-for-5, 2B, HR, 2Rs, 3RBIs) for a 5-1 lead. Coastal answered as
Derek Bender (2-for-4, R) reached on a fielding error by ODU and advanced to third on a double by
Blake Barthol (3-for-3, 2 2B, R, RBI).
Caden Bodine and
Zack Beach followed with RBI groundouts to score Bender and Barthol to make the score 5-3.
After both teams were held scoreless in the fourth, both teams traded runs in the fifth. ODU's Bouche led off the top of the inning with a home run to give the Monarchs a 6-3 lead. The Chants cut the deficit to two at 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth as Barthol hit his second double of the game to score
Sam Antonacci (2-for-4, R).
However, the Monarchs would score the final nine runs over the final four innings including four home runs for the final margin of 15-4.
ODU's Blake Morgan (2-0, 2.2IP, 4Hs, 3Rs, BB, K) got the win while Jacob Gomez picked up his fifth save on 4.2 innings pitched, allowing no runs on three hits with nine strikeouts.
Coastal Carolina and ODU will return to action in Conway, S.C., for the rubber game of the series on Sunday, April 7. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET and will be streamed on ESPN+.
