Aggies Knock Off Chants in Season Opener

Stout with 15th career triple-double

Box Score ATLANTA, Ga. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team fell to New Mexico State 3-1 in the Chanticleers' season opener at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., on Friday afternoon. With the loss, Coastal drops to 0-1 on the year, while the Aggies move to 1-0.
 
Coastal's Jalyn Stout finished with a match-high 18 kills and added 17 assists and 13 digs to record the 15th triple-double of her career. Lauren Malone tallied 12 spikes, while Agata Lesiak put down nine kills. Cagla Bengi assisted with a team-high 20 kills.
 
Defensively, CCU totaled just two blocks as Valentina Varani and Emma Van Elslande stopped two kill attempts at the net. Sydney Lewis tied Stout for a team-high 13 digs.
 
New Mexico State was paced by Starr Williams, Ashley Herman, and Yasso Amin with 14, 12, and 12 kills, respectively, while Claudia Rossi (25) and Nellie Reese (23) finished with a combined 48 assists.
 
The Aggies stopped seven kill attempts with Williams making four stops and Nicole Briggs and Kacia Brown making three blocks each.
 
In the opening set, NMSU raced to a 5-3 lead before Mari Sharp added back-to-back kills to increase the advantage to 7-3. After a Stout kill, New Mexico State used a 4-1 spurt to take an 11-5 advantage. The Aggies used a 5-2 burst to take a 16-7 lead at the media break.
 
Coastal closed the margin to six at 18-12 as Malone recorded a pair of kills in a 5-2 burst. After a pair of Aggie kills, the Chants cut the deficit to five at 20-15 before New Mexico State claimed the first set at 25-16 with a 5-1 run to lead the match 1-0.
 
CCU opened the second set with an 8-3 surge to force NMSU to take the early timeout, highlighted by three kills by Malone. After the break, the Aggies used a 10-5 run to even the set at 13-13 to see Coastal open a 15-13 advantage on a service ace by Dilara Unal.
 
New Mexico State evened it up at 16-16 with a 3-1 spurt before CCU's Stout used a pair of kills to take a 22-18 lead with a 6-2 run. The Chants held on to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 run as four of the next seven points scored were by miscues by both teams.
 
After falling behind 4-2 in set three, Coastal opened a 6-5 lead with a 4-1 spurt, highlighted by a pair of kills for Malone and Stout. The two teams traded nine points for a 10-10 tie before the Aggies scored eight unanswered to take an 18-10 advantage. The Chants responded with four straight including, kills by Lesiak and Van Elslande, to cut the margin to 18-14. New Mexico State got a 7-3 burst for a 25-17 third-set win for a 2-1 match lead.
 
In the final set, both teams traded the first 10 points for a 5-5 tie before back-to-back kills by Lesiak gave Coastal an 8-5 lead. NMSU used an 11-5 surge to take a 16-13 lead and force the Chants to call a timeout. The Aggies outscored CCU 9-6 to win the final set 25-19 and match at 3-1.
 
Coastal Carolina will remain in Atlanta, Ga., for a meeting with the UCLA Bruins on Sunday, Sept. 1. The opening serve is scheduled for noon ET.
