SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – After a two-hour rain delay, the Coastal Carolina University women's golf team opened the Cardinal Cup with a 19-over 307 first-round score at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Ky., to finish the opening 18 holes 11th.
Varatkarn Kunkaew led the Chanticleers carding a one-over 73 (38-35). She finished with a team-best three birdies in the round and finished her last 13 holes in two-under fashion and finished tied for 11th. Her 3.80 scoring average on the par four holes led the first round, while her three birdies was tied for eighth.
Freshman
Ella Murray made her CCU debut and shot a three-over 75 (38-37) with a team-best 13 pars in her round to finish the round tied for 21st, while senior
Sara Sarrion finished the round tied for 59th with a seven-over 79 (37-42), and her 3.90 scoring average on par four holes was tied for second.
Carolina Hortian (38-42) and
Aoife Devaney (43-37) each shot an eight-over 80 to finish tied for 64th. Devaney averaged 4.50 on the par five holes which was tied for second.
The weather played a roll in the opening round as none of the 15 teams finished under par and only 16 strokes separating the top 11 teams. Rutgers is leading the pack after the first round with a three-over 291. Middle Tennessee State is second at six-over 294, while host Louisville and Western Kentucky are tied for third at nine-over 297.
Sun Belt member James Madison and Lipscomb are tied for fifth at 10-over 298 followed by Mercer (+13, 301), East Carolina (+14, 302), Marshall (+16, 304), and Cincinnati (+18, 306) filling in the top-10.
Following CCU is Evansville in 12th at 20-over 308, with Eastern Kentucky (+21, 309), Toledo (+27, 315), and Bellarmine (+35) rounding out the field.
