ESTERO, Fla. - One day after posting its highest score of the year, the Coastal Carolina men's golf team rebounded by carding its lowest round of the season, 12-under 276, to finish ninth with a 54-hole total of 6-under 858 (284-298-276) at the West Bay Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday.
"I'm extremely proud of the fight our guys showed today," Chanticleers' head coach
Jacob Wilner said. "We followed up our worst round with our best round."
As a team, the Chants registered 21 birdies with
Max Bengtsson and
Drew Sykes each recording an eagle; Bengtsson on hole No. 2 and Sykes on No. 3.
Bengtsson shot a career-low 11-under 205 (68-72-65), which included a career-best 7-under 65 in the final round to move up 10 spots on the final day. He finished tied for fourth place, four strokes behind co-medalists Vaughan McMeans of George Mason and Charlie Box of Eastern Michigan.
Host Florida Gulf Coast took home the team title at 36-under par 828, and Elon finished as runner-up at 29-under 835.
Freshman
Harrison James and sophomore
Coleman Ferguson, both playing as individuals, each shot under par. James tied for 19th at 4-under 212 (70-72-70) and Ferguson tied for 26th at 2-under 214 (72-72-70).
Jack Lee posted his best round of the tournament at 5-under 67 and finished tied for 34th at par 216. Sykes finished one stroke behind his teammate at 1-over 217 (70-73-74) in 39th place.
Owen Kim fired a two-day total of 6-over 221 (75-76-71) to tie for 51st, and
Santiago Schele rounded out the Chants' lineup tied for 60th at 11-over 227 (74-80-73).
Coastal concludes its fall season next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 13-14, at the Everett Buck GMC Classic in Little Rock, Ark.
