Women's Basketball to Face Virginia Tech in Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Coastal Carolina women's basketball continued their road trip and will match-up with Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Saturday, Nov. 14. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra on ESPN+ as well as the Chanticleer Sports Network.
 
ABOUT THE CHANTS
  • The Chanticleers stand at 2-2 after back-to-back victories over Lees-McRae and UNCW. 
  • Coastal dominated UNCW 80-56 on Wednesday night to grab their first road victory of the season.
  • Coastal shot 39 percent from the field, going 29-74. The Chants continued their hot three-point shooting, going 10-25. Coastal won the rebounding battle 50-40 while forcing 19 turnovers, committing just nine of their own.
  • The Chants held UNCW to just 33 percent shooting and 18 percent from three.
  • For the third time in the first four games, Tessa Grady led the Coastal scoring attack, matching her career-high set on Sunday against Lees-McRae at 23 points. Grady made nine of her 20 shot attempts, going 5-12 from beyond the three-point line.
  • Coastal Carolina is coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2024-25, going 23-9 (12-6 SBC) and reaching the semifinals of the Sun Belt tournament and WNIT for the first time in program history.
  • Coastal's 23 wins last season were the second-most in program history behind their 25 wins in 2019-20. The Chants hit 240 3-pointers throughout the campaign, a new program record. 
  • Leading the 3-point charge last season was Kristin Williams, who led the Sun Belt with 82 made 3-pointers. Williams was named to the preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team.  
  • After finishing fourth in the Sun Belt last season, the Chants were picked sixth in the preseason coaches poll, their highest preseason ranking since 2020.
  • The Chanticleers welcome 10 new players to the team in 2025-26, with three freshmen and seven transfers.
 
ABOUT THE HOKIES
  • Virginia Tech is currently 3-0 with wins over Gardner-Webb, Loyola Maryland and Towson.
  • Through the first three games, redshirt junior guard Carleigh Wenzel leads the team in scoring with 14.7 points per game.
  • The Hokies are led by second-year head coach Megan Duffy, who led the team to a 19-13 record last season and an appearance in the WBIT.
SERIES HISTORY
  • The Chants will be meeting the Hokies for the first time.
  • Overall, Coastal is 2-30 against ACC teams, grabbing wins over Clemson and Wake Forest.
  • Coastal beat Clemson 63-47 on Nov. 15, 2015. The Chants' win over Wake Forest came on Jan. 9, 2000 in Conway.
  • Kevin Pederson beat Clemson on Oct. 29, 2019 in an exhibition 74-72.
TESSA TURNS IT UP
  • In her first four games for Coastal, junior forward Tessa Grady has emerged as the team's leading scorer, averaging 15.5 points per game.
  • Grady led the team in scoring against Miami (OH) with 13 and Lees-McRae with a career-high 23.
  • She matched her career-high in the next game, scoring 23 more against UNCW.
  • The Wisconsin transfer has started her season shooting 41% from the field and 33% from three.
COASTAL CHAOS
  • Head Coach Kevin Pederson coined the term "Coastal Chaos" prior to last season due to his philosophy of tough defense and forcing teams to be uncomfortable.
  • The stats backed up the chaotic defense, as the Chants led the Sun Belt with 20.3 turnovers forced per game and ranked second in steals per game with 10.88.
