Women's Basketball Set to Host Coastal Carolina Tournament

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina women's basketball is set to host the Coastal Carolina Tournament at the HTC Center, facing Jackson State on Friday at 2 p.m. ET and Gardner-Webb at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+ as well as the Chanticleer Sports Network.

ABOUT THE CHANTS
  • Coastal snapped a two-game losing streak by beating Presbyterian 87-38 on Monday night. 
  • Coastal forced a season-high 36 turnovers while racking up 22 steals along with 14 blocks, all season-highs.
  • The 14 blocks were the most in a single game in program history.
  • Kristin Williams led the Chants with 23 points, going 8-13 from the field and 6-7 from long range.
  • Entering this weekend, Coastal ranks 24th in the country with 23.9 turnovers forced per game.
  • The Chants rank 27th in the nation with 26.9 three-point attempts per game.
  • Tessa Grady leads the team in scoring with 14.4 points per game. Currently, Grady ranks 13th in the country with 21 three-pointers made in seven games

ABOUT THE TIGERS
  • Jackson State is currently 1-4 with their lone win over Mississippi University for Women. 
  • The Tigers fell 75-69 to Arkansas State on Sunday.
  • Leianya Massenat leads the team in scoring with 11.0 points per game.
  • Margaret Richards is in her second year as the head coach of the Tigers, going 16-15 last season.

SERIES HISTORY
  • The Chants will be meeting the Tigers for the first time.

ABOUT THE RUNNIN' BULLDOGS
  • Gardner-Webb is currently 2-5 and have won two of their last three, taking down Hampton and UNCW. 
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs fell 54-52 to UNCG on Friday.
  • Nyla Walker leads the team in scoring with 11.1 points per game.
  • Terri Williams is in her first year as the head coach of the Runnin' Bulldogs after serving as an associate head coach for Penn State last season. 

SERIES HISTORY
  • Coastal and Gardner-Webb will be meeting for the 19th time, with the Runnin' Bulldogs leading the series 11-7.
  • The last matchup was Feb. 27, 2016, resulting in a 61-51 Gardner-Webb victory at the HTC Center. 
  • Gardner-Webb has won four of the last five meetings. 

TESSA TURNS IT UP
  • In her first seven games for Coastal, junior forward Tessa Grady has emerged as the team's leading scorer, averaging 14.4 points per game.
  • Grady led the team in scoring against Miami (OH) with 13 and Lees-McRae with a career-high 23. 
  • She matched her career-high in the next game, scoring 23 more against UNCW.
  • Grady poured in 22 points against #16 NC State, going 8-17 from the field and 5-11 from three
  • The Wisconsin transfer has started her season shooting 40% from the field and 33% from three.
  • Currently, Grady ranks 13th in the country with 21 three-pointers made in seven games.

COASTAL CHAOS
  • Head Coach Kevin Pederson coined the term "Coastal Chaos" prior to last season due to his philosophy of tough defense and forcing teams to be uncomfortable. 
  • The stats backed up the chaotic defense, as the Chants led the Sun Belt with 20.3 turnovers forced per game and ranked second in steals per game with 10.88.
