Women's Basketball Begins Conference Play with JMU on Wednesday Night

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina women's basketball (6-5) starts Sun Belt play with JMU (8-4) on Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ESPN+ as well as the Chanticleer Sports Network.

ABOUT THE CHANTS
  • Coastal has won five of their first six home games this season, averaging 88.2 points per game at the HTC Center
  • Currently, Coastal ranks 130th overall in the NCAA women's basketball NET rankings, one of nine Sun Belt teams ranked in the top 130.   
  • Coastal battled back from a late deficit to take down UNCG 67-61 on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at the HTC Center.
  • The Chants went 22-57 (39%) from the field and 8-22 (36%) from three-point range, while making 15 of 18 free throws. 
  • Through 11 games, Coastal ranks tied for 62nd in the country with 75.8 points per game
  • Tessa Grady leads the team in scoring with 13.6 points per game. 

ABOUT THE DUKES
  • JMU currently stands at 8-4 this season with a 1-1 mark on the road.
  • The Dukes are coming off a 78-65 loss against Notre Dame on Sunday. 
  • Peyton McDaniel leads the team in scoring with 19.4 points per game. 
  • Sean O'Regan is in his 10th year as the head coach of the Dukes, going 30-6 and 18-0 in Sun Belt play last season, earning the 2025 Sun Belt Coach of the Year award. 

SERIES HISTORY
  • Coastal will be meeting James Madison for the 9th time, with the Dukes holding the series lead 7-1. 
  • Last season, Coastal and JMU met three times, with the Dukes winning all three, including in the semifinals of the Sun Belt tournament (89-65)
  • Coastal's only win came on Jan. 26, 2023 (79-64).

SHE'S ARRIVED
  • In her freshman season, Kinsea Grimes has emerged as one of Coastal's most dynamic players.
  • In her first 11 games, Grimes has scored in double figures five times with three 20+ scoring performances, including a season-high 25 against Gardner-Webb. 
  • Grimes has collected two double-doubles, with 11 boards and 25 points against Gardner-Webb and 10 rebounds with 19 points against UNCG.
  • In the last five games, Grimes has averaged 16.4 points per game while shooting 52% (27-52) from the field and 61% (11-18) from three. 
  • With 11.2 points per game this season, Grimes leads the Sun Belt in points per game for a freshman.

THREE-POINT PARTY
  • Currently, Coastal ranks 15th in the country with 9.5 made three-pointers per game.
  • The Chants are also ranked tied for 30th in the country with 27.0 three-point attempts per contest.
  • Both Tessa Grady and Kristin Williams rank in the top-75 in the country for made three-pointers, with Grady tied for 14th (35) and Williams tied for 70th (28).

COASTAL CHAOS
  • Head Coach Kevin Pederson coined the term "Coastal Chaos" prior to last season due to his philosophy of tough defense and forcing teams to be uncomfortable. 
  • The stats backed up the chaotic defense, as the Chants led the Sun Belt with 20.3 turnovers forced per game and ranked second in steals per game with 10.88.
  • This season, Coastal ranks 34th in the country with 21.9 turnovers forced per game, and 74th with a turnover margin of 3.6.
