Chants Stay Hot, Winning Two on Day Two of the Battle at the Beach

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team went undefeated on day two of the Battle at the Beach, picking up victories over Marist and Kent State. 

Marist 1, Coastal 9

The Chants put the first two runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning when Lucy Goodwin led off with a double and Libby Pippin drove her home on an infield single. On the following play, a defensive miscue by the Red Foxes allowed Coastal to take a 2-0 lead. 

Coastal took advantage of a leadoff double by Keirstin Roose in the bottom of the fourth inning when Maddy Jennings lined an RBI double on the following at-bat to make the score 3-0. 

Marist narrowed the gap to 3-1in the top of the fifth inning when Sienna Kunze reached on a double scored on a CCU error. 

The Chants extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, courtesy of back-to-back home runs over the center field wall by Delaney Keith and Georgia Hood, pushing the lead to 5-1.

Coastal put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning fueled by a leadoff home run by Jennings. Brie Normandin and Goodwin then drove in consecutive runs and Marist committed a fielding error to lift the Chants to a 9-1, run rule victory.

Nicolette Picone improved to 4-0, tying her career-high with nine strikeouts in her third complete game of the year. 

Kent State 4, Coastal 9

Kent State got out to an early lead in the top of the first inning when Delaney Robeson smashed an RBI double to right center field and Katie Jo Moery followed with a two-run home run to make the score 3-0.

The Golden Flashes added to their lead in the top of the second inning when Robeson picked up her second RBI of the night to give Kent State a 4-0 lead.

Coastal responded in its half of the second inning when McKennah Metzger laced an RBI double to record her first collegiate hit. Normandin followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to close the gap to 4-2. 

The Chants tied the game up at 4-4 in the bottom of the third inning off of back-to-back RBI singles from Roose and Jennings. 

CCU pushed in front for the first time in the bottom of the fourth inning after Hood singled with the bases loaded to drive in to runs to bring the score to 6-4. 

Coastal sealed the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs on Pippin's RBI double and Keith's two-run shot to center field to secure the 9-4 win.

Kate Ryan recorded her first win of the season to move to 1-0  while Picone picked up her first save.

Tomorrow's action has been cancelled due to inclement weather.
