Chants Use Home Run Barrage to Fuel Twin Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ATLANTA – The Coastal Carolina softball team picked up two wins on the opening day of the I-75 Invitational, defeating No. 24 Kentucky 3-1 and Georgia Tech 9-3.

The Chants launched four home runs over the two games, powering nine of their 12 runs on the day.

Coastal Carolina 3, No. 24 Kentucky 1

Coastal struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Maddy Jennings launched a solo home run over the center-field wall, giving the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead.

Kentucky evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth after Karissa Hamilton reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a pair of Coastal wild pitches.

The Chanticleers reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Georgia Hood drew a walk, and Keirstin Roose followed with a two-run homer to left field, putting Coastal ahead 3-1.

Nicolette Picone shut down the Wildcats over the final two innings, retiring the side in order in the sixth and striking out two in the seventh to secure her fifth win of the season in her fourth complete game.

Georgia Tech 3, Coastal 8

Hood kicked off the scoring in the top of the first inning, smashing an RBI double down the left field line to give CCU a 1-0 lead.

The Chants extended their lead in the top of the third when Delaney Keith ripped a two-run home run over right field to push CCU ahead, 3-0.

Georgia Tech responded in the bottom of the third, scoring on a single and double to narrow the gap to 3-2.

In the top of the fifth, Hood extended Coastal's lead with a single up the middle that drove in Libby Pippin to put the Chants ahead, 4-2.

The Yellow Jackets kept the Chants within striking distance in the bottom of the sixth when Alyssa Willer hit an RBI single to left field, reducing the deficit to 4-3.

The Chants sealed the victory in the top of the seventh when Jennings belted a grand slam and Brie Normandin added an RBI single to give CCU a 9-3 win.

Abby Henderson improved to 2-1 on the year, allowing just two runs in her 4.0 innings of work, while Picone picked up her second save of the season.
