CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating Kansas State 8-3 on Friday at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Dean Mihos sparked the Chanticleers (2-0) with a three-hit performance, scoring twice and driving in a run. Coastal's offense capitalized on Kansas State miscues, scoring three runs in the first and adding three more in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Coastal batters were plunked eight times by K-State pitching.
Domenico Tozzi's two-run double in the first inning set the tone, while Sebastian Alexander crushed a two-run homer in the fourth. Coastal added an insurance run in the seventh when Mihos singled home Blegen Pado, who reached on an error.
Cameron Flukey allowed two unearned runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings, striking out three. Dominick Carbone picked up the win in relief. He entered the game with the bases loaded and promptly fanned two Wildcats in-a-row to end the inning and the threat.
Carbone combined with Darin Horn, Ryan Lynch and Andrew Bowers for 4 2/3 innings of one-run relief from the bullpen.
Kansas State scored twice in the first inning on Keegan O'Connor's two-run single, but the Wildcats struggled to produce runs after that. Seth Dardar provided their lone extra-base hit with a solo home run in the ninth.
JJ Slack (0-1) took the loss for Kansas State, surrendering four runs (three earned) on three hits over 1 1/3 innings. The Wildcats committed four errors in the game.
