Chants Fall in Extra-Innings to Wisconsin

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team suffered a 6-4 extra-innings loss to the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday afternoon at St. John Stadium.

The Chanticleers got things rolling in the bottom of the first inning when Delaney Keith ripped a single past the second baseman, and Georgia Hood crushed a home run to center field, driving in Keith to put Coastal up 2-0.

The Badgers responded immediately in the top of the second when Emmy Wells lined a two-run double off the center-field wall, tying the game at 2-2.

After three scoreless innings, Wisconsin appeared to take the lead in the top of the sixth when Makenzie Foster crossed home plate. However, Coastal successfully challenged that she left second base early, negating the run and keeping the score tied.

The Chanticleers had a prime opportunity in the bottom of the seventh when they loaded the bases with no outs, but Wisconsin's defense held strong, sending the game into extra innings.

Wisconsin pulled ahead for the first time in the top of the eighth when Hilary Blomberg smashed an RBI double, driving in the runner placed at second base for a 3-2 lead.

Coastal answered in the bottom half when Maddy Jennings laced an RBI single down the left-field line, evening the score at 3-3.

The Badgers broke the game open in the ninth, scoring three runs on a wild pitch, an error, and an RBI single by Emily Bojan to take a 6-3 lead.

Coastal attempted to rally in the bottom of the inning, with Libby Pippin driving in a run on an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-4, but it wasn't enough to extend the game.

Nicolette Picone (6-1) suffered her first loss of the season, allowing six runs on 10 hits in nine innings of work.
