CONWAY, S.C. – Ty Dooley and
Caden Bodine delivered back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Coastal Carolina walked off Rutgers, 6-5, in front of 3,171 fans at Springs Brooks Stadium on Saturday.
Trailing 5-4 entering the final frame, Dooley launched a solo homer to right field to tie the game. After a flyout, Bodine sent the crowd into a frenzy with a blast to right-center, sealing the Chanticleers' ninth win of the season.
Bodine finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, including a key two-run double in the seventh that helped Coastal Carolina (9-2) claw back into the game. Dooley went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Rutgers (4-6) was led by Ty Doucette, who hit two home runs and drove in two runs. The Scarlet Knights built a 5-2 lead through seven innings, scoring twice in the fourth and adding another run in the seventh.
Coastal Carolina's bullpen kept the game close, with
Dominick Carbone (3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER) and
Matthew Potok (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER) shutting down the Scarlet Knights.
Hayden Johnson (2-0) earned the win with a perfect ninth inning.
Rutgers reliever Zach Gleason (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering the two home runs in the ninth.
