TROY, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina softball team defeated Troy 3-1 in extra innings to win the opening game of a three-game series Friday evening.

After Georgia Hood recorded a double in the top of the first inning, the Chanticleers were held scoreless and hitless for the next seven frames, sending the game into extra innings.

In the top of the ninth, Coastal applied pressure when Keirstin Roose drew a walk and stole second to move into scoring position. Maddy Jennings then ripped an RBI single up the middle to give the Chants a 1-0 lead.

Troy responded in the bottom of the frame, tying the game 1-1 on an RBI single to extend play.

Coastal capitalized off a leadoff walk and stolen base from pinch runner Moira Baxter in the top of the 10th inning. Freshman Reese Collier then hammered a two-run home run over the center-field wall to put Coastal ahead 3-1.

Nicolette Picone shut the door in the bottom of the inning, securing the final three outs to earn her 14th win of the season. The senior struck out seven while allowing six hits over a career-high 10.0 innings of work.

Coastal Carolina returns to action for Game 2 against Troy at 10 a.m. ET.
