BUIES CREEK, N.C. – No. 24 Coastal Carolina secured a 5-4 road victory over Campbell on Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium, holding off a late rally from the Camels to improve to 16-5 on the season.
The Chanticleers struck early, plating two runs in the first inning. Dean Mihos was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and later scored on a single from Sebastian Alexander. Blake Barthol added a sacrifice fly to bring home another run, giving Coastal a quick 2-0 lead.
Caden Bodine extended the lead in the second with an RBI single, scoring Mihos, who had doubled down the left-field line. Campbell responded in the fifth when Charlie Schramm tripled and scored on a Darnell Parker RBI single. The Camels cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth on a Joey Morton groundout.
Coastal added crucial insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Walker Mitchell, who was hit by a pitch, came around to score on a Wells Sykes single in the eighth. Mihos drew a walk in the ninth and later scored on another sacrifice fly from Barthol to make it 5-2.
Campbell (8-12) mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth. A pair of walks and a single from Parker brought home a run before a throwing error allowed another to cross, trimming the margin to 5-4. However, Scott Doran worked out of trouble, striking out Dalen Thompson to secure his second save of the season.
Dominick Carbone (2-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out three. Campbell's Jackson Roberts (2-2) took the loss after allowing three runs in two innings.
