HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Coastal Carolina softball team defeated Marshall, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon to clinch the series-deciding victory.
The Chanticleers jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning when
Keirstin Roose slashed an RBI double to left field, driving in
Libby Pippin to put Coastal ahead 1-0.
CCU extended its lead in the top of the third, scoring two runs on a fielder's choice and an RBI single to make it 3-0.
In the fourth inning,
Clara Hudgens laced a triple to left field and was driven in on a groundout, increasing the Chanticleers' lead to 4-0.
Coastal added an insurance run in the sixth when
Georgia Hood delivered an RBI single to right field, pushing the advantage to 5-0.
Marshall attempted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh as Ramey George hit a three-run home run over the left-field wall, but the Chanticleers held on for the 5-3 win.
Nicolette Picone earned her 22nd win in the circle, striking out three in her 19th complete game of the season.
