HARRISONBURG, Va. — No. 21 Coastal Carolina used a late offensive surge and wore out James Madison's pitching staff by drawing 15 free bases to earn an 8-4 win Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park, sweeping the Sun Belt Conference series.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the eighth, the Chanticleers (33-11, 17-4 Sun Belt) strung together four consecutive two-out hits to ignite a five-run frame and seize control.
Caden Bodine delivered the go-ahead hit with an RBI double, and
Sebastian Alexander,
Blake Barthol and
Walker Mitchell followed with RBI knocks of their own to blow the game open.
Coastal Carolina batters were hit by a pitch 10 times and drew five walks, consistently applying pressure to a James Madison (13-31, 6-15) pitching staff that used five arms in the loss.
Bodine paced the Chanticleer offense with a 2-for-5 day, driving in four runs, including a two-run double in the second inning that initially erased an early deficit. Alexander added two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
On the mound,
Darin Horn (3-1) earned the win with a scoreless seventh inning in relief. Starter
Riley Eikhoff allowed three runs over 5.2 innings before the Coastal bullpen took over, combining for 3.1 innings of one-run ball.
Coastal Carolina has now swept three straight conference series and extended its Sun Belt-best league record to 17-4.
