STATESBORO, Ga. — The Coastal Carolina softball team fell to Georgia Southern, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field to drop the series.
The Eagles capitalized on a walk and a Coastal fielding error in the bottom of the first inning to put runners on first and second. Valarie Combs followed with a two-run double to left field, giving Georgia Southern an early 2-0 lead.
The Chanticleers answered in the top of the second, as
Clara Hudgens delivered an RBI single to drive in
Brie Normandin and cut the deficit to 2-1.
Georgia Southern extended its lead in the bottom of the second, scoring two more runs on an RBI single and a groundout to make it 4-1.
Madi Gillespie and Delanie Thames added RBI doubles in the third and fourth innings, respectively, pushing the Eagles' advantage to 6-1.
The scoring continued in the fifth, when Thames laced a two-run single up the middle to seal the 8-1 win for the Eagles.
Abby Henderson (9-5) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over two innings of work.
