Lacrosse’s Late Rally Comes Up Short At Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Despite a four-goal performance from Evelyn Kitchin and a total game effort from Coastal Carolina, the Chanticleers couldn't complete a late rally in a narrow 12-11 setback at Virginia Tech on Wednesday afternoon.

Coastal (5-8, 1-2) clawed back from an early three-goal deficit and tied the game three times in the second half, but the Hokies (8-7, 2-5) answered each time and held off a final-minute goal by Kitchin to preserve the win.

Kitchin led all scorers and notched her final goal with 16 seconds remaining to pull Coastal within one. The Chanticleers had edged closer just two minutes earlier on a man-up free-position goal from Alyson Mascolo, who finished with two goals on the day.

Sydney McClure also tallied a pair of goals and added two assists, while Brigid Cardillo scored twice and Alexandra Horn chipped in one. Coastal outshot Virginia Tech 33-28 and controlled 14 draws to the Hokies' 12, but came up empty on their final possession.

Charlotte Sadler recorded eight saves in goal for Coastal, who played even with the Hokies in the second half and held a 14-12 advantage in ground balls over the final three quarters. Sadler crossed, the 300-saves mark for her career, the third player in program history to achieve that feat.

Virginia Tech was led by Sophia Trahan's four goals and used a 4-of-8 showing on free-position shots to make the difference.

Coastal Carolina returns home this weekend looking to bounce back in conference play.
