CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina began the year with a thrilling five-set victory over Maryland, 3-2 (21-25, 25-15, 25-27, 25-23, 15-9), at the HTC Center on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
The Chanticleers (1-0) trailed 2-1 after three sets but took the fourth set 25-23 and then put the match away with a dominant 15-9 victory in the deciding frame.
"We showed some poise tonight," Chanticleers' head coach
Steve Loeswick said. "We came out strong in the fourth set and got an early lead. We played with a little more energy, a little more passion, and a little more sense of energy.
"We have a talented squad with a lot of new players on the team, but they have confidence in themselves and each other, which helped us run through the fifth set."
Coastal jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the deciding set and pushed its lead to 8-4 on a kill by
Emily Fowler. The Terps cut the Chants' lead to one, 10-9, but CCU ended the match on a 5-0 run, bookended by a pair of kills from junior
Jalyn Stout.
"When we have steady energy like [we had in the fifth set], it's easier for us to take the lead, to be steady and keep pushing. We all came together. We looked like a completely different team than we did a week ago."
Stout recorded the 35th triple-double of her career with 20 kills, 21 assists, and 10 digs. Junior
Ava Wallis also tallied 21 assists, while senior
Bailee Earnhardt collected a career-high 19 digs, one more than her previous high set against Maryland two years ago.
The Chanticleers out-hit the Terps .238 to .126, with nine more kills (57-48) and six fewer errors (22-28).
Fowler, Stout,
Anna Rita, and
Emma Van Elslande were each credited with three solo blocks.
The Chanticleers continue their season-opening three-game homestand Sunday against North Carolina at 1 p.m.
