Football Blanked By East Carolina

CONWAY, S.C.  — Coastal Carolina University could not overcome East Carolina's defense as the Pirates rolled to a 38-0 win on Saturday night at Brooks Stadium.

Coastal Carolina (1-2) was shut out for the first time since Oct. 29, 2011 — a 42-0 loss at Stony Brook — and managed just 239 total yards. Quarterback Tad Hudson completed 19 of 39 passes for 172 yards but was intercepted twice and sacked five times.

The announced crowd of 21,634 marked the third-largest in Brooks Stadium history, and Coastal has now hosted two of its three biggest crowds in the first two games of the 2025 season.

The Chants were their own worst enemy at times as untimely penalties wiped out gains of 47 and 21 yards in the third quarter. Overall, Coastal was penalized seven times for 55 yards along with five turnovers which ECU converted into 14 points.

ECU QB Katin Houser threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns, including a pair of short scoring strikes to Yannick Smith, while ECU piled up 497 yards of total offense. The Pirates (2-1) sealed the game with three fourth-quarter touchdowns after taking a 17-0 lead into the final period.

Running backs Parker Jenkins, Mike Wright Jr., and TJ Engleman Jr. each added rushing touchdowns as ECU controlled the line of scrimmage, finishing with 204 rushing yards.

NOTEBOOK
• Shut out for first time since 2011:
Coastal hadn't been blanked since a 42-0 defeat at Stony Brook on Oct. 29, 2011, and had not been shut out at home since Nov. 22, 2008, vs. Charleston Southern (24-0).
• Big crowd again: Saturday's 21,634 fans rank as the third-largest home crowd in program history. Combined with last week's stadium-record 22,217, Coastal has hosted two Top-3 attendances in back-to-back games.
• Offense stalls: The Chanticleers managed only 67 rushing yards on 26 attempts (2.6 per carry). Their longest play was a 39-yard completion from Tad Hudson to Robby Washington.
• Turnover trouble: Coastal committed five turnovers — three lost fumbles and two interceptions — and went 0-for-1 in the red zone.
• Defensive leaders: Shane Bruce, Xamarion Gordon and Tray Brown each made seven tackles to pace the Coastal defense. Bruce had his second interception of the season and fourth for his career.
