Volleyball Opens Sun Belt Play At Marshall

CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina wraps up its 10-game road swing this weekend as it opens Sun Belt Conference play against Marshall at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W.Va. The Chants are looking to snap a two-match skid after dropping back-to-back road matches in Miami last week, after winning six in a row, while Marshall won each of its previous two matches. CCU is 2-2 in true road games this season with wins over Davidson and NC State, while the Herd lost its only home match of the season to Eastern Kentucky.

SERIES HISTORY
The Chanticleers have won six straight over the Thundering Herd since becoming conference foes in 2022. Coastal Carolina leads the all-time series 6-1, with its lone loss coming at a tournament at East Carolina in 2012. CCU is 2-0 in Huntington and 4-0 in Conway.

QUICK GLANCE: MARSHALL
• Marshall wrapped up non-conference play by going 2-1 at the Wofford Invitational last weekend and enters Sun Belt competition with an 8-5 overall record on a two-game winning streak.
• Senior Bella Thompson is the reigning Sun Belt Conference Setter of the Week after collecting 124 assists in three matches (10.33 per set) at the Wofford Invitational with an all-tournament team nod. She ranks second in the SBC with 356 assists this season.
• Emma Sayre is second in the SBC in total digs (202) and fifth in digs per set (4.18).
• Emma Barnett leads the Herd with 2.98 kills per set, followed by Elli Barry with 2.27 kills per set. Barnett is fifth in the Sun Belt with 146 total kills.
• Beatrice Ciccarelli is Marshall's leader in blocks with 44, sixth-most in the conference.

LAST TIME OUT
• Coastal Carolina went 0-2 at the 305 Invitational in Miami last weekend, falling in four sets to the Hurricanes and FIU. The Chants split the first two sets with Miami before dropping the last two. They won the opening frame against the Panthers, then lost three in a row.
• FIU forced Coastal into a season-low .092 hitting percentage, one night after hitting just .108 against Miami.
• Junior Jalyn Stout posted her 39th career triple-double, tying the NCAA record, with 13 kills, 11 assists, and 20 digs against FIU. It was the second time in her career she collected 20 digs.
• Stout had her consecutive double-double streak snapped at 29 straight matches at Miami. The last time she didn't record a double-double was Sept. 21, 2024, against VCU (seven kills, 18 assists, seven digs).

OPENING SBC PLAY: The Chants are opening Sun Belt play against Marshall for the second straight year. Last year, they posted a pair of 3-0 wins at the HTC Center. Coastal has won its conference opener in each of its nine seasons as a member of the conference and has opened SBC play 2-0 eight times. In the league's current scheduling format, CCU has swept its opponent on opening weekend all three seasons (2022 - Georgia State; 2023 - at Georgia State; 2024 - Marshall).

TRIPLE-DOUBLE RECORD: CCU junior Jalyn Stout is one triple-double shy of setting the NCAA career record across all divisions. She tied the record of 39 held by Jordyn Gates, who played at Division II Grand Valley State, last Friday against FIU. Her next triple-double will make her the first player with 40 career triple-doubles.

DENIED!: Coastal Carolina leads the Sun Belt Conference in blocks per set (2.60) and total blocks (112.0), ranking among the top 40 nationally in both categories (28th total blocks/37th blocks per set). Junior middle blocker Anna Rita ranks atop the SBC individual leaderboard in both categories (1.151 blocks per set/65 total blocks).

WALLIS REACHING NEW HIGHS: Junior setter Ava Wallis has distributed more assists in 42 sets, 218, than she did in the 42 sets she played all of last season, 213. She also has more digs, 102, than she did in her first two seasons combined, 93 (59 sets).

MORE ACCURATE, MORE WINS: The Chants are 7-0 this season when posting a higher hitting percentage than their opponents and 0-4 when registering a lower rate. They are also a perfect 7-0 when they have more kills than their opponents.

FIRST SET INDICATOR: Coastal Carolina has captured the first set in eight of its 11 matches and owns a record of 6-2 in those matches. Its two losses came against North Carolina and FIU. The lone match the Chanticleers rallied to win after dropping the initial frame was in five against Maryland. They lost in five to South Carolina and in four at Miami (Fla.).
