DAVIDSON, N.C. - Coastal Carolina swept its way to the Wildcat Classic tournament title with a 3-0 win over Elon Saturday morning, followed by a 3-0 sweep of host Davidson later in the evening. The Chanticleers won all nine sets they played during the two-day event, which included a 3-0 win over Delaware State on Friday.
Junior
Jalyn Stout was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and
Bailee Earnhardt and
Anna Rita were named to the all-tournament team.
Stout posted her 14th and 15th consecutive double-doubles with 11 kills and 12 assists in the opener against Elon, then recorded 17 kills and 13 digs versus Davidson. She was one dig shy of a triple-double in the opener and two assists short in the finale.
Ava Wallis distributed double-digit assists in each match, handing out 12 against Elon and 21 versus Davidson. Earnhardt collected 15 digs versus the Phoenix and 10 against the Wildcats.
MATCH RECAP
vs. Elon - The Chanticleers defeated the Phoenix in straight sets: 25-14, 25-17, 27-25. CCU jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the opening set and built a 20-5 lead en route to an 11-point win. The second set saw the Chants take a 7-2 lead and never relinquish it, although Elon did get within two points at 18-16. Coastal closed out the set on a 7-1 run.
It appeared that the third set would be another comfortable win for the Chants, leading 20-14. However, Elon scored five straight points to make the score 20-19 and forced the match into extra points, tying it at 24-24. Rita's kill gave CCU a 26-25 lead, and a Phoenix attack sealed the match for Coastal.
at Davidson - All three matches against the Wildcats were decided by three points or less: 25-22, 25-22, 25-23.
The Chants scored the final three points of the opening frame to claim a three-point victory, capped by a service ace from
Emma Van Elslande, who started the run with her third of three kills in the set.
Davidson led 17-15 in the second set, but Coastal closed out the frame on a 10-5 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Rita and
Anzley Rinard each had two kills during the spurt before Stout closed the set with her sixth kill.
Costal faced another two-point deficit late in the third set, trailing 20-18, but finished the match on a 7-3 run to complete the sweep. The Chants took the lead at 23-22 on a kill by Rita, but Ariyana Johnson tied the match on the ensuing serve. Stout and Rita had back-to-back kills to end the match.
NEXT MATCH
The Chanticleers will return to the court Friday as they take on Cleveland State in the first of three matches at the Wolfpack Invitational in Raleigh. CCU will face Utah Valley on Saturday and NC State on Sunday. All matches will be played at NC State's Reynolds Coliseum.
