
Volleyball Makes First SBC Road Trip To App State

CONWAY, S.C. --- Coastal Carolina continues Sun Belt Conference play with its first league road series of the season, visiting App State for matches Friday and Saturday. The Chanticleers enter the weekend 4-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while App State is 9-7 overall and 2-0 in the Sun Belt.

SCOUTING APP STATE: App State enters the series with consecutive victories after sweeping its conference-opening trip to Old Dominion. The Mountaineers won Thursday's opener 3-1 while hitting .342. Bella Hutchens led App State with 17 kills and a .452 attack percentage, while setter Raegan Richardson surpassed 2,000 career assists. App State was even more efficient in Friday's 3-0 victory, hitting .365 and holding Old Dominion to a negative attack percentage. Charlotte Thompson delivered 13 kills at a .360 clip, Richardson handed out 30 assists and MeMe Davis collected 13 digs. The Mountaineers will present a strong challenge at the service line and net. Through their first 16 matches, App State accumulated 111 aces and 149 total blocks.
CHANTS ON THE ROAD: Coastal is 2-1 in true road matches this season, earning five-set wins at Wofford and four-set wins at Jacksonville. Their lone loss was at No. 17 Tennessee in three sets.
SERIES VS. APP STATE: Coastal owns a 22-7 advantage in the all-time series with App State, including an 8-4 record in Boone and an 18-4 mark in conference matches. The Chanticleers have won eight of the last 10 meetings and swept last season's series in Conway, winning 3-0 and 3-2. App State swept the most recent series played in Boone in 2024, winning in four sets and three sets. Before those two losses, Coastal had won six consecutive road matches in the series from 2016-22.
LAST SEASON VS. APP STATE: Coastal swept the two-game series from the Mountaineers in Conway last season. After taking the opener in straight sets, the Chanticleers won the finale 3-2. Coastal dropped the opening set 27-25 before taking the next two, 25-11 and 25-18. App State forced a fifth set with a 25-22 victory in the fourth, but the Chants closed the match with a 15-11 decision.
LAST WEEKEND: Coastal opened Sun Belt play with consecutive 3-0 losses to Georgia Southern. In Friday's opener, Hatteras Welker matched her season high with 12 kills while hitting .500. She added two aces and three blocks. Kaylee Musick posted 34 assists and 10 digs, while Jonna Spohn collected 18 digs. Musick recorded her second double-double of the weekend with 20 assists and 11 digs, and Spohn again led the Chants with 18 digs.
RINARD REACHES 500: Junior Anzley Rinard recorded the 500th kill of her collegiate career during Friday's match against Georgia Southern. Rinard enters the App State series with 501 career kills, including 303 in two seasons at Coastal. She leads the Chanticleers this season with 100 kills and averages a team-best 2.44 kills per set among players who have appeared in at least 20 sets.
CLOSING IN ON 500: Two other Chanticleers are approaching 500 career kills: Anna Rita (485) and Hatteras Welker (479). Rita has accumulated 231 kills during her Coastal career after beginning at Austin Peay. Welker has 86 kills in her first season with the Chants following two years at Eastern Michigan.
CONTROLLING THE NET: Coastal has produced 101 total blocks through 11 matches, averaging 2.24 per set. Welker leads the Chants with 46 blocks and a 1.02 blocks-per-set average. Amarah Johnson has added 22 blocks in 22 sets, while Rita has 21 blocks in 23 sets. Welker has recorded at least three blocks in nine of Coastal's 11 matches.
