CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina used a seven-goal second quarter and a late defensive stand to hold off Charlotte, 11-10, Wednesday afternoon at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
The Chanticleers improved to 4-0 on the season after overcoming a 2-0 first-quarter deficit and answering every Charlotte push down the stretch.
After being held scoreless in the opening period, Coastal erupted for seven goals in the second quarter to take a 7-6 halftime lead.
Sophie Kingsborough sparked the surge with two goals and two assists, while
Alyson Mascolo scored twice in the period, including a free-position finish with 18 seconds remaining before the break.
Charlotte tied the game at 8-8 late in the third quarter, but Coastal regained control early in the fourth.
Alexandra Horn converted a free-position power-play goal at 5:25, and
Gabrielle Beaudet scored 10 seconds later on another player-advantage opportunity to make it 10-8. Mascolo then finished a feed from Kingsborough at 4:11 for the eventual game-winner.
The 49ers scored twice in the final 23 seconds to pull within one, but Coastal secured the final draw to seal the victory.
Mascolo led the Chanticleers with three goals, Kingsborough added two goals and two assists, and Nikki Seven finished with two goals and an assist. Beaudet scored twice, while Horn added a goal, an assist and a team-high seven draw controls.
Charlotte Sadler earned the win in goal with five saves. Charlotte was paced by Isa Torres' four goals and Katie Gorski's five-point effort (two goals, three assists).
Coastal returns to action Sunday, Feb. 22, at Davidson.
