Women's Lacrosse Falls To William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary built an early cushion and withstood a late Coastal Carolina push to hand the Chanticleers a 9-7 setback in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium.

Coastal Carolina (4-2) trimmed a two-goal deficit to 7-6 early in the third quarter, but the Tribe answered with back-to-back goals to regain control and close out the non-conference victory.
Sophomore Alexandra Horn led Coastal with four points on two goals and two assists, while Carleigh Patterson added two goals and an assist. Senior Sophie Kingsborough scored twice – all on free-position opportunities – and junior Evelyn Kitchin added a goal as the Chanticleers finished with seven scores on 22 shots.

William & Mary (3-2) jumped out quickly, scoring five times in the opening quarter to take a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes. Coastal's first-quarter goals came from Patterson (11:42) and Kingsborough (5:46), but the Tribe answered with four goals over the final 7:52 of the period to establish the early separation.

The Chanticleers settled in during the second quarter, opening the frame with a defensive stop and getting within 6-4 behind a free-position goal by Patterson (7:56) and a Kitchin finish off a Horn assist (7:22). Horn then made it a one-goal game at 6-5 (1:22), but William & Mary struck on a free-position, man-advantage opportunity with nine seconds left before halftime to carry a 7-5 lead into the break.

Coastal again pulled within one early in the third as Kingsborough converted her third free-position goal of the day at the 11:20 mark to make it 7-6. The Tribe responded with a goal at 7:55 of the third and added an insurance marker at 13:20 of the fourth to push the margin back to three. Horn scored again off an Alyson Mascolo assist at 6:01 to cut it to 9-7, but Coastal could not get closer down the stretch.

Charlotte Sadler made eight saves in goal for the Chanticleers. Defensively, Coastal forced nine caused turnovers and matched the Tribe with 21 ground balls, but William & Mary won the shot battle 24-22 and finished 2-for-4 on free-position attempts.

Coastal returns to action next week as it continues its non-conference slate against Sacred Heart on Wednesday, March 4, inside Brooks Stadium at noon.
