CONWAY, S.C. – No. 16 Coastal Carolina used a seven-run sixth inning to power past No. 12 Wake Forest on Tuesday night at Springs Brooks Stadium, earning a 10-4 victory over the Demon Deacons.
The Chanticleers struck first in the bottom of the second inning. With two runners aboard, Ty Barrango delivered a two-run single to give Coastal an early 2-0 lead.
Wake Forest answered with four runs across the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take a 4-2 advantage.
That's when the Coastal offense erupted.
In the bottom of the sixth, Colby Thorndyke sparked the rally with his first home run of the season, cutting into the deficit and igniting a seven-run inning for the Chanticleers. Later in the frame, with the bases loaded, Dean Mihos drove in Walker Mitchell with an RBI single before Trace Mazon followed with an RBI single of his own to keep the surge going.
With the bases still loaded, Blake Barthol was hit by a pitch to force home Barrango. The Chanticleers continued to pour it on as Rex Watson delivered a two-run single to right field, capping the explosive inning and pushing Coastal in front 9-4.
Coastal added another run in the seventh inning when Mazon drove in a run to extend the Chanticleer lead to 10-4.
Mazon paced the Coastal offense, finishing 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs, while Mitchell added a pair of hits in the victory.
Connor Kane was credited with the win for the Chanticleers.
A crowd of 5,122 was on hand at Springs Brooks Stadium, marking the third-largest regular-season crowd and the sixth-largest overall crowd in stadium history.
With the victory, Coastal Carolina improves to 10-6 on the season.
The Chanticleers will return to action this weekend as they travel to Boone, N.C., to open Sun Belt Conference play against Appalachian State. First pitch for Friday night's series opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
