CONWAY, S.C. — The Coastal Carolina softball team dropped game one of the series to the Appalachian State Mountaineers 7-3 on Friday evening at St. John Stadium.
After two scoreless innings, Coastal took the lead 1-0 courtesy of a
Delaney Keith home run that cleared the right field wall.
App State responded in the top of the fourth inning when Macy Hamby and Emilie Ching each hit home runs to push the Mountaineers ahead 3-1.
The Chants leveled the score in the bottom of the fourth frame when
Kaelin Cash launched a two-run homer over the left field wall to make the score 3-3.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Mountaineers capitalized off back-to-back singles from Julia Girk and Makayla McClain when Grace Barrett cleared the bases on a two-run double to give App State a 5-3 lead.
App State added two more runs to its total in the top of the sixth, scoring on a CCU throwing error and an RBI single to extend the advantage to 7-3.
Coastal threatened a comeback in the bottom of the sixth frame loading the bases on two singles and a walk, but the Mountaineers were able to escape the jam unscathed to hold onto the 7-3 victory.
Abby Henderson dropped to 5-8 in the circle giving up seven earned runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings of work.
